Who was your community partner, and can you describe the project objectives?
Elves Special Needs Society. The project objective was to write and illustrate a children’s picture book. The choose-your-own-adventure narrative would provide neurodivergent children with coping mechanisms for difficult situations. This format would be a fun way to give kids agency and choice while educating them.
What was the biggest takeaway from your CSL project?
My biggest takeaway from the experience was the importance of empathy and trying to see the world through the perspective of others. While certain situations may be manageable for some, they can be completely overwhelming to others, and it is so vital to be understanding during these moments of stress. It is through empathy that people can truly connect.
How can you apply any newly gained knowledge and skills to your future endeavors?
As I hope to pursue a career in medicine, this opportunity has helped me develop my skills in communication, education and emotional connection with others. These knowledge is incredibly valuable in essentially any job, yet are not developed in most university courses. I am grateful to this program for providing the space to develop these skills.
Why should students consider being involved with CSL?
The CSL program has been an incredible opportunity to develop my own skills while contributing to a greater cause. This experience has been unlike any other program I have seen in university, as it allowed me to develop academically and professionally while being a part of the community. I felt like I made a real difference.
