This year was packed full of dynamic learning! (Literally, many of our classes were at full capacity this year!).
Fall 2025
Taking place in the Ermineskin neighbourhood, HUM 101 returned in the Fall with a course called "Celebrations." Together, we reflecte on how holidays and traditions in Canada and around the world reflect who we are and what we value.
We also continued to our partnership with the Faculty of Science to offer Science 101 on campus once again! We engaged in guest lectures, field trips and hands-on active learning around campus. We ended the term with a trip to the zoo at -30 degrees!
Winter 2026
In the Winter, the theme for our Ermineskin course was "Community, Connections, Possibilities." We spent our time thinking about the value of community as well as how communities take shape. There are times communities are connected by sameness, and other times where they are defined through difference. In several classes we learned about how identity and community have shifted across time and culture. It reminds us of how we need to keep in mind that what we know today isn’t forever and hasn’t always been. Together we did our best to connect and build understanding across difference.
Each week at WINGS we were introduced to women who were movers, shakers, makers, and creators. It was a fun term and we feel inspired and ready to do a bit of moving and shaking ourselves!
Over in Science 101 we are busy learning about Planet Earth. We learned about how Earth came to be, visited a -40 ice core laboratory, and gratefully listened and learned from Elder Cliff Cardinal. Most weeks we were been able to get out of the classroom and visit one of the many cool museums or labs on campus. The guest instructors have led us on active learning tours where we have been able to use our minds and all five senses to better understand this incredible planet we call home. Finally, we hosted a Planet Earth photography show as part of our end-of-term celebration.
Thank you so much to everyone who supports Humanities 101 and Science 101. We feel very grateful and know that without you, this couldn’t happen. Thank you. Also, we would like to give a HUGE shout out to Edmonton Transit who came to our rescue and supplied us with additional bus tickets to get us through both terms!
This semester I was very fortunate to work with the CSL department as a HUM 101 intern.
My internship included supporting both Science 101 on campus and Hum 101 at the Ermineskin Community Centre, two great programs that serve adult learners coming to education through non-traditional and community-based pathways. In Science 101, I helped provide snacks, supported field trips, and focused on making students feel welcome in a university setting. In Hum 101, I organized snacks, facilitated and participated in class discussions, and welcomed many amazing guest lecturers who shared their knowledge with the class. Beyond the classroom, I also took on broader intern duties, such as research and tabling during the Week of Welcome, where I engaged with many students and promoted CSL. I also created posters and social media posts for the HUM 101 community to raise awareness.
Throughout the term, I have learned a great deal alongside the students. A highlight for me was visiting the campus bug museum with Science 101, where I saw the U of A’s astounding butterfly collection and some pretty creepy-looking live hissing cockroaches! Overall, being an intern with CSL has been incredibly rewarding, and I have loved working with the CSL staff and being part of such a supportive, engaged team committed to accessible learning and community engagement.
