Meet the Team!
Principle Investigator: Dr. Trelani (Milburn) Chapman
As a researcher, I value the Upstream Model of public health. The story has been told of rescue workers pulling people from a river, becoming increasingly exhausted. After some time, it was determined that someone needed to go upstream to find out how people were getting in the river in the first place. This idea of identifying risk early to potentially reduce or ameliorate its effects is the essence of my research in early language and literacy.
For fun, I like to go to the Farmer's Market, look for 'finds' at yard sales and antique shops, and spend time with family and friends.

Andrés Dorado
I'm Andres, a MSc - Rehabilitation Sciences student with a background in psychology and linguistics at the University of Alberta. My main focus is on language acquisition and literacy in young children (with "typical" and "atypical" language development), including plurilingualism/"multilingualism". I also enjoy watching all kinds of movies, especially horror films. That's where I spend most of my time when I'm not studying/working.

Lara Flanzbaum
I am an undergraduate student completing a Bachelor of Science with a major in Health Science. My goal is to pursue a career in Speech-Language Pathology. I love working with children and I am interested in learning how children acquire and develop language.
Outside of school, I enjoy snowboarding, travelling, baking, and spending time with family and friends!
Ben Wang
I'm an undergraduate student majoring in Computer Science. I've been happy to help out on the technical side of things at the Language & Literacy Lab. I'm interested in working on studies that try out new language testing measures for children while using my knowledge to help streamline our work.
When I'm not in the lab, I like to spend my time managing extracurricular or settling down with friends for a game of D&D.
Yukta Dutt
I’m Yukta, I am currently working towards my BA in Linguistics with a minor in Sociology at the University of Alberta. My main interests lie in atypical language development, specifically in populations with autism and down syndrome. I am also interested in bilingual language acquisition. I'm a second-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Education in the Secondary stream. I joined the lab in my first year and I am so grateful for all of the new skills I've learned so far. I'm very passionate about child development and I feel so lucky to contribute to the amazing work this lab is doing pertaining to language and literacy in that sphere!

When I am not studying or working in the lab you can find me crafting or DIYing something- from jewelry to home decor!
Tori Bergquist
I’m a third year Bachelor of Science student majoring in Psychology with a minor in Biology. I’m very excited to be working with this lab and getting an opportunity to gain more hands on experience to help me reach my career goals!
Maycie Toone
Hi, my name is Maycie! I am a sociology major and minoring in linguistics. My goal is to one day become an SLP. I love learning about cultures and languages and people. I find human development super interesting, especially the intersection between speech development and different disorders. One of my sisters was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder when she was 3 and I've been fascinated about how she sees the world, how things work in her brain, and how she learns. Outside of school I enjoy running, exploring new places, and bingeing a good sit-com.
