Abstracts

Last update: September 30, 2018

MONDAY, OCTOBER 1ST

José Antonio Piedra (Universidad de Almería)

Talk: “Virtual Reality applications to society”

In this introductory talk we will survey the most important applications of virtual reality and high technologies.

Diego Cangas (Universidad de Almería, Virtual Dor)

Talk: “Neotrie and its future applications and developments”

A demonstration of the functionalities of Neotrie and hidden tips, and the introduction of the next steps that the program will do in the coming months.

José Luis Rodríguez (Universidad de Almería)

Talk/workshop: “Constructions in Neotrie”

In this talk, we will give a general overview of the wide range of constructions and related activities that can be done with Neotrie at present. From simple constructions such as building a square in space, to fractals using the tools already implemented. Some of them will be practiced by participants in a collaborative workshop afterwards.

Mateja Budin (Mathema, Institute for Popularization of Mathematics, Slovenia) CANCELLED

Talk: "The possibilities of using the NeoTrie at non formal educational programmes for young learners, adults and educators, developed and organized by Mathema"

In this talk we give a brief overview of the idea of using NeoTrie at our programmes on spatial visualisation, polyhedra etc., and discuss the possibilities of using NeoTrie at the Mathemic International Competitions.

Workshop: “Archimedean polyhedra and more from the Mathema's House of Polyhedra”

José Manuel Fernández (IES Pablo Picasso Málaga, Málaga), Encarna López (IES Reyes Católicos, Vélez- Málaga)

Workshop: “From the space to the plane and viceversa: Projections in Neotrie"

The dihedral system involves a geometric system which uses the orthogonal projection to represent three-dimensional figures on the plane. Although it is not included in the curriculum of the mathematics' subject, it is part of the necessary contents for a basic technical training of quality and that is included in the curriculum of other areas. Neotrie VR, as a VR environment to create, manipulate and play with 3d geometric objects, offers a unique opportunity to overcome the difficulties that the learning of these contents offers to the students.

Andrés Mateo (UAL)

Workshop: “Graphs in Neotrie”

NeoTrie is a powerful tool at the Didactics of Mathematics. In this workshop, we will brush up some basic concepts from Graph Theory, how to implement them in NeoTrie and how to use it as a gamification technique.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2ND

Grażyna Morga (Zespół Szkolno-Przedszkolny, Żernicy, Poland)

Talk: “Educational pilot experience using Neotrie”

The possibilities of using Neotrie to teach geometry of children aged 11-14 years old are presented. Neotrie is tested as a part of math lessons at the Primary School in Żernica (Poland). The purpose of these tests is to analyze the possible didactic applications of the program and formulate opinions and feedback for its further improvement.

The basis for the implementation of the software were the lesson scenarios developed based on the core curriculum in math, in Poland. In total, 25 lessons were carried out. Moreover, the additional classes were also organized within the scheme of the scientific circle. After each lesson, the teacher kept a log with the information about the tasks carried out, the advantages and disadvantages of the program as well as important recommendations for other users.

It is observed that the pupils find NeoTrie classes more attractive than those with the use of other didactic methods. Since Neotrie had been implemented, the pupils became more engaged, open-minded and active. Especially younger children, but also older, weaker ones and those with some dysfunctionalities more easily overcome their timidity.

Concluding, Neotrie VR is an excellent tool for teaching spatial geometry, helping children to organize their geometric knowledge, increase their creativeness and have fun.

Juan Jesús Ojeda (Universidad de Almería)

Talk: “Natural interaction in education of special needs”

This is a join work with José Antonio Piedra, Luis Iribarne, and César Bernal. In the 21st century, the landscape of education has changed dramatically due to the application of technology in teaching and learning. This is especially true for teaching children with special needs. Technology has made it possible for the special needs children to be actively involved in their learning. The use of interactive whiteboards in the Special Education Center Princesa Sofia presented a few challenges for both the teachers and the students, hence KiNEEt was developed to overcome these problems. KiNEEt is a system which has been developed with the major aim of improving physical and cognitive skills in students with special needs. https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11042-018-5678-1

Eloy Almeida Fleitas (CIVITAS, Centro Especializado en Personas con Discapacidad Intelectual, Gran Canaria)

Talk: “Virtual Reallity adapted to people with Intelectual Disabilities.”

Virtual reality (VR) is shown as a new and motivating tool, being interesant in teaching- learning processes. It also generate sensations that stimulates the senses. Because of that, existing the shortage of studies, from CIVITAS it is considered very important to explore the potential benefits that can offer VR in the population of intellectual disability.

The R+D department of CIVITAS is developing a project based in the use of NeoTrie, and other virtual environments, as software for the creation of activities adapted to people with intellectual disability. Its areas of application include, from programmes of cognitive stimulation, where they work the attentional system, mnesic capabilities, visospatial and visoconstructive functions until the knowledge of their corporal scheme and laterality.

Workshop: "Tessellations, polyedra and symmetries”

(Emmanuelle) We will present the "Labosaïque" which is a dispositif devoted to study the symmetries in tessellations and polyedra. This "concrete" dispositif is based on use of mirrors and plastic pieces. The purpose of this workshop is to see how to develop the same studies and activities by using virtual reality.

(Antonio) On the other hand, an easy algorithm to build semirregular 2D tessellations, as well as some 3D ones with Neotrie will be explained. In addition, research results concerning minimality of symmetry groups are discussed.
