These stars are the one of the most amazing for the human eye.
They are very luminous, 500 to 30,000 times greater than the sun with short periods (the time it takes to the brigthess to go to its lowest and be on the highest again) of change that range from 1 to 100 days, their pulsating expand and shrinks dramatically in a short period of time but in a specific pattern.

Cataclysmic variables (CVs) are binary star systems (two stars that orbit around the same center of mass) that have a white dwarf (a star that has not energy to make light from its own anymore and is very very dense because of that) and a normal star companion. They are typically small – the entire binary system is usually the size of the Earth-Moon system – with an orbital period of 1 to 10 hours.
They brighten because of sharp and violent outburst caused by something called thermonuclear processes that occur when the atoms inside of the star start to get excited and excited until they fusion creating a lot of energy in form of a explossion.
These include binary type stars, with two close stars having a mutual effect on mass.
They can be:
Supernovae

They are the most amazing, they can increase more than 20 magnitudes, becoming approximetely one hundred million times brighter
Novae and recurrent novae

They are a close binary system that are variable due to explosions on the surface but the star is not destroyed!
Dwarf novae
Dwarf novae
they are a double white stars that transfer mass between them, that menas that they exchange energy making regular variable outbursts
