One piece of the transition to high school is the selection of classes for freshman year. The high school counselors met with all the 8th graders in December and have worked with them on the course selection process. Students will finalize their course requests with high school counselors in early February. Parents/guardians will receive an email that lists their child’s official course requests during the 2nd week of February. If a student or parent/guardian wishes to change any request, they must communicate that change to their middle school counselor on or before February 15th. Requests for course level changes may be made through June 1st.
We believe, and District policies and procedures support, that families have a choice in the course selection process. Students/parents may choose to request any course level assuming course prerequisites have been met. If students/parents want to find out more before making the decision, they should first start by asking the 8th grade teachers. They can also reach out to their high school counselor and/or high school administrators for more information about courses. We can also help connect parents with high school Content Area Chairs (heads of departments) for even more course-specific information, as necessary. Finally, it is also important for students/parents to know that high schools have multiple supports in place to help students who enroll in honors level courses, and we will do everything we can to help students succeed.

Unit 4 8th Graders: Students are to enter their course requests via their Home Access Account. Counselors visited the middle schools in December and had students log on and practice entering in a few requests into Home Access. They were also provided the two documents below to assist them.
Private School Families: Please use the course selection planning sheet and the Curriculum Handbook for course planning. More detailed information and materials will be shared with families after receiving an RSVP for one of the private school registration sessions. As private school students do not yet have a Home Access account, school counselors will enter in their freshman course requests.
