Class Happenings 2026-2027

10/30 Our week included:

• Learning about paragraphing our writing

• Practicing suffixes like s, es. As well as possessive nouns, like Sam's car for example

• Playing ASL bingo for fall vocabulary

• Making posters for our CVHS fundraiser

• Listening to our new read aloud book "Gus and Glory"

10/23 Some things from the week:

• New signs like pronouns (my, yours), Halloween words (trick or treat, skeleton, costume,  pumpkin, boo, scary, ghost, candy,  clown, puppet, Halloween, witch, zombie, party, graveyard, October)

• We had the "Reading to End Racism" program stop by. Our reader shared "Something Beautiful" by Sharon Dennis Wyeth

• In third grade math, we have been working hard to solve multidigit addition problems using the standard algorithm. We also learned how to estimate by rounding to the nearest hundred to help us check to see if our answers make sense. Next week, we will continue to work on subtracting multidigit numbers. One of our favorite recent activities has been a geometry lesson about triangles using geoboards. Ask your child what other words start with the prefix tri-!

10/16 Here's what we accomplished:

• Practiced using quotation marks (just " " not commas at this time)

• Subtracting multi digit numbers (4th grade math)

• Practiced our spelling words, like right and write

• Learned new signs like raking, fall (season),  actions (stand, dance, sit, up/down stairs, slide, swing, and fall down), clothing (skirt, dress, pants, socks, shoes,boots, scarf, underwear, hat,  and gloves), have, want, like

• Read electricity books/articles including 

  • "Electricity All Around" by Barbara Alpert and Gail Saunders-Smith

  • "Electricity" by Rebecca Olien

  • Electricity: A Question and Answer Book" by Adele Richardson

  • "How Electrcity Gets from Power Plants to Homes" by Megan Cooley Peterson

  • Benjamin Franklin and the Kite Experiment

10/9 This week we...

• Wrote story ideas and mapped out narrative elements

• Played with shaving cream for a chip bucket celebration

• Added multi digit numbers (4th grade math)

• Made agamographs with positive affirmations

• Learned new signs: other colors (pink, purple, blue, white, black, grey, silver, and gold), weather words (weather, rain, snow, storm,  wind, cloudy, sunny, cold/cool, warm/hot, lightening/thunder) and clothing (short sleeve/long sleeve, jacket, shirt)

• For fun learned  these facts from Nat Geo Kids 

• Continued to learn about different kinds of energy

10/2 And now it's October! Here's what we've been up to:

• Learning about different types of power (nuclear, solar, wind, and hydro) in order to understand electricity. Check out our generator video below! Also understanding you need movement, magnets, and coil in order to get a generator to make electricity

• Rounding/estimating numbers (4th grade math)

• New ASL signs including: days of the week (You can practice with the song too),  tree, leaves, change colors,  fall colors (yellow,  green, red,  orange, and brown), like/don't like,

• Attended a Vermont Supports assembly. We'll be making holiday cards soon! See flyers above for more information

• Mrs. Lyford came to visit for a special read aloud. We listened to "Stubby" by Sadra Mallery. And kids got our own "stubby" pencil. 

• For fun we learned about Fat Bear Week and voting. Here is an article with previous winners. This year's winner is named Backpack.

9/24 Our learning for the week:

• Blends- more than one consonant making next to each other in a word where each letter keeps it own sound (like B-L in blend)

• Adding commas and "and" to a list of items

• New sign language terms- practice, car, school, book, paper, pencil, pen, sandbox, room, computer, laptop, first/then, line up

• Comparing numbers using < , >, or = (4th grade math)

• How to be a good partner

9/18 Another successful week! Check out our bulletin board design below. I'm a big promotor of inclusion and welcome.

Here's what we've been up to:

• Digraphs (like "ch") and trigraphs (like "tch")

• Book genres

• Subjects in sentences, proper nouns, and using "and" to connect a list of items

• Place value skills, like expanded form and "weird way" (like 19 tens and 13 ones)

• Learned new signs- breakfast, lunch, snack, look, reading, book, wrting, art, math, science, social studies, music, recess, PE, library, guidance, technology, spelling, and favorite

9/11 Another busy week! In our classroom we have the privilege of learning American Sign Language (ASL) once a week. We are learning sign supported speech, which means we aren't learning ASL grammar. Instead we are practicing our signs using English rules. Today we practiced signs for: yes, no, bathroom, wait, ready, and time. Next week we hope to sign words related to our school schedule

We also learned about September 11th. Here is the Scholastic News article. In the future we hope to have paper copies that I can send home with you.

Today we read "How I Spent My Summer Vacation" and wrote silly stories. In my story I went to Paris and then was hired as an extra in an Avengers movie.

Fourth grade math families: check Friday folders for the Iready newsletter. We have been learning about place value and representing numbers in multiple ways. Also here is a game called Pig that you can play at home. All you need are dice  and paper!

9/4 We completed our first full week of school! 

Here are some things we did:

• We learned about submitting our best work through this video

• Gwyn, the speech language patholigst, came to our class and read us a story called Roary's Talker

• In 4th grade math, we played with pattern blocks, solved math puzzles, and talked about a growth mindset

• Had some fun making silly sub plans!
