During Reader's Workshop, we will have a mini-lesson and then students will participate in reading centers, which consist of independent reading, comprehension, spelling/vocabulary, phonics/phonemic awareness, teacher table, and handwriting/keyboarding. These reading centers will change based on student needs and lesson content. They are directly aligned with state standards and WCUUSD performance indictators.
During Writer's Workshop, we will be focusing heavily on the mechanics of writing, conventions and grammar. We need to be able to write our letters with ease before we can focus our brain power on forming complete, strong sentences. We need to know what a good sentence is. We will still have free writing and time to share our stories!
We will work our way up to writing longer stories when we have those strong foundational skills. That would look like a mini-lesson and then specific, learning intention-focused, independent writing time. The mini-lessons consist of teacher modeling and mentor text read-aloud. There will always be a sharing time at the end of each writing block. Students will peer edit and use rubrics to revise their writing pieces (genre-based).
We also use a program called Fundations (word work/handwriting). We will do this 4 days a week.
Mrs. Bevins and Mrs. Ely are interventionists who will take some students during various times throughout the day for literacy services.
