When I find interesting tech tools, software, or applications, I start to play with them. This longtime practice has earned me accolades in my graduate program as being "tech-savvy." Yet this reputation for being tech-savvy does not come from using those tech tools during my F2F experiences with students. It comes from my ability to identify and analyze students’ interests and needs in order to design effective out-of-class learning experiences. I use tech tools to facilitate these kinds of experiences for students, thoughtfully integrating tech with course objectives.
To stay effective, I frequently update my knowledge on current technology trends and tech tools, constantly trying different tools in search of high-quality out-of-class learning experiences. I am a quick learner; whenever I work with a new program, I build a strong familiarity with it and adopt new skills to achieve programmatic ideals. I believe this is because I find it a pure joy and entertainment to play with technology.
In 2016, I completed and received the Advanced Certificate for Online Teaching from Warner School, University of Rochester. After that, I converted existing F2F graduate courses into fully online courses, including ED 480 Second Language Acquisition and Bilingualism. I did this work in collaboration with Tecnológico de Monterrey in Spring 2017.
As a part of the certificate program, I created an ESL/EFL Teacher Training Course on Blackboard. The four videos that follow are ones I created to help teachers understand how cooperative learning activities and supportive materials can facilitate students' self-paced learning.
1. Introduction
2. Speed Interview
3. Partners
4. Grammar Workshop
I created this video for the 2020 NSF STEM for All Video Showcase: Learning from Research and Practice.
*While I am only listed as a presenter on the page, I had full production responsibility. This video received the Facilitators' Choice award.
I am a founding member of the Center for Learning in the Digital Age (LiDA) and involved myself in major projects and initiatives. Working at the LiDA center has allowed me unique access to interdisciplinary and digitally-rich projects in both K-12 and higher ed settings. For example, I have toured school districts in western New York that have participated in digital conversion and 1:1 initiatives that give each student access to a tech device. I am also supporting the LiDA Center’s and the K-12 Digital Consortium’s website & e-module development. Examples of my work can be found at High Leverage Teaching Practices for Remote Teaching and Developing a shared vision for digitally-rich teaching.
I have explored Articulate Storyline 2 extensively for its potential to create interesting and engaging online trainings. I applied this knowledge by converting F2F educational content into online modules for community health workers in maternal and child health at Maternal & Infant Health Center of Excellence, University of Rochester Medical Center. I did this work in conjunction with a New York State sponsored online introductory training effort.
I have also converted website content for the Center for Learning in the Digital Age website into an interactive e-module. I did this as a demonstration for center leaders, so they could understand the interactivity that the e-module could provide. Although it is still in the design phase, I am sharing it here for an example of my work.
I am proficient with technology and enjoy playing with various programs and platforms. Here is a list of programs and software I play with.
Blackboard - Canvas - Edmodo - Moodle - Google Classroom
These are the two programs I used for my dissertation. I am also currently teaching a doctoral course titled ED 529 Using Qualitative Data Analysis Software at Warner school by using NVivo12 (Fall 2021, 2022). I am also leading a doctoral students' study group for Tableau (data visualization software) under the Center for Learning in the Digital Age, University of Rochester.
Wordpress - Pressbooks - Google Sites - Microsoft Publisher
Sometimes I create a website from scratch, or sometimes I am in charge of managing existing websites.
