Mary Ellen Burris Professor, Clinical Assistant Professor
Center for Learning in the Digital Age
Warner School of Education, University of Rochester
In 1993, I was scolded by my teacher for not knowing the English alphabet during my first English class in my home country of Korea. In 2006, I became an English teacher in Japan. In 2013, 20 years after my English teacher reprimanded me, I became an ESL instructor at Juniata College (Huntingdon, PA), responsible for teaching credit-bearing English for academic purposes (EAP) courses. And now, in 2025, I serve in the Warner School's Center for Learning in the Digital Age as a clinical assistant professor (Rochester, NY).
I am an avid traveler and a proud TESOLer with years of international teaching experience, first in my native country of Korea, and later in Japan and the United States. I have garnered invaluable ideas and skills as I have interacted with students from different native languages and varied cultural backgrounds. After 20 years of teaching, I am still brimming with ideas and full of passion for teaching and learning. This e-folio documents my journey as an educator and researcher.
