I specialize in thoroughly understanding and analyzing human-centered AI integration - to be more specific, generative AI (Gen AI). My expertise in Gen AI is founded upon my primary research focus that centers around the exploration of language learners' language interaction outside of the classroom, which is motivated by their deep, strong personal interests.
A unique context to study human-centered AI integration I have explored is learners’ interest-driven out-of-classroom language use and learning opportunities (e.g., fan practices), where increased engagement within more flexible and extended learning experiences fosters learners’ transferable skills. Such interest-driven practices were among the first to actively integrate generative AI, offering me early exposure to this technology even before the emergence of ChatGPT in late 2022.
Many people say what GREAT POWER Gen AI has. Well, Gen AI indeed has a great potential. But to be honest, my primary focus in not really on Gen AI itself. To make my point clearer, let me reference a famous line from the Spider-Man movie franchise:
"With great power comes great responsibility"
When it comes to Gen AI or any emerging technology, that is my motto: "With great power comes great responsibility". I believe we need not only to understand the great power we have in our hands but, more importantly, to recognize the great responsibility that comes with it. My focus lies in shaping lifelong attitudes, mindsets, and perspectives that guide us in responsibly utilizing the great powers of the time.
Great power is and will constantly change and evolve. For now, it maybe Gen AI - but soon we will face another great power. What remains unchanged—and what we must prepare our students and ourselves for—is the ability to wield that great power responsibly, making sure we interact with it for our own well-being and the well-being of others.
