Before beginning the design process, we wanted to speak with a Parkinson's patient who might benefit from our application to better understand the following:
How confident Parkinson's patients are in performing general computer tasks and navigating through a website
What information would be most valuable in understanding their disease progression
What resources could we direct users toward that would be most helpful
How confident are you in performing simple computer tasks (e.g., mouse click, typing, etc.)
Are there current assistive technology features you use regularly?
What is some information pertaining to Parkinson’s that was helpful when you were first diagnosed?
Was there anything you wish you were more informed about when first diagnosed?
Have you ever used a website to view or manage medical information before? (such as URMyChart)
Is there anything else that you think would be important for us to know when building the website?
Recommended the Michael J. Fox Foundation as an informative source to give users
Warned against suggesting users have Parkinson’s disease
Suggested a feature where users can track progression in accordance with their medication
Suggested including explanations for what a patient’s score implies
Appreciated the simplicity and elegance in the designs we presented
We also wanted to speak with a neurologist who could give us more insight into the following:
What information is most valuable for clinicians in understanding a patient's disease progression
What existing features have they used in similar applications that they find helpful
How to approach sensitive information such as breaking news that a patient is showing signs of Parkinson's
What information about a patient do you find most valuable at a quick glance?
How confident are your patients in performing simple computer tasks (e.g., mouse click, typing, etc.)
Have you ever used a website to view or manage medical information before? (such as URMyChart)
Is there anything else that you think would be important for us to know when building the website?
Stressed importance of motor function rather than speech or facial expressions
Suggested feature where patients could track progression according to medications
Appreciated the simplicity and clarity of certain features
Warned against suggesting therapies to patients
