Problem Statement and Background
Learning how to cook can be pretty daunting for beginners, especially when following complex recipes. Instructions in cookbooks or online videos often fail to provide the hands-on guidance that novice cooks need, leading to their mistakes and loss of confidence. Additionally, multitasking in the kitchen can be challenging, as users constantly have to switch between watching instructional videos, reading recipes, and preparing ingredients. This could make beginner cooks very overwhelmed when they shouldn't be.
Why AR?
AR technology offers a solution by providing real-time, interactive cooking instructions directly in the user's kitchen. With AR overlays and step-by-step guidance, novice cooks can follow recipes without taking their eyes off their ingredients, making the learning process smoother and more enjoyable, thus building the confidence of the user.
Proposed Solution
AR Cooking will be an augmented reality application, developed using Unity, that acts as an interactive culinary guide, helping users cook step-by-step with real-time overlays and instructions. Users can point their smartphone at ingredients or cooking utensils, and the app will guide them through the cooking process with interactive prompts, such as “chop the onion,” “preheat the oven,” or “mix the ingredients.”
The app will overlay the instructions in the user’s field of vision, so they don’t need to look away from their workspace. AR Cooking will also provide a 3D object visual to see what the end result of a step should look like. For now, we have implemented simple recipes so far to allow beginners to take it slow and feel confident in their cooking. To make the experience even more engaging, the app will also include voice commands. AR Cooking aims to make cooking more accessible and enjoyable for people of beginner skill levels, turning the kitchen into an interactive learning environment.
