Figure 1: Zugnoni User Interview, Current Piano Posture
Team 1 of Section 30 was tasked with creating a safe and functional solution for playing a piano keyboard that accommodates Dr. Zugnoni’s height and comfort when playing in a sitting position. We were also asked to provide a durable stand that holds electronic devices of varying sizes and paper sheet music at eye level.
Dr. Zugnoni’s current setup does not allow for a comfortable playing position. Her current piano stand, in its shortest setting, is too high for her to play comfortably. She is also unable to read sheet music on her iPad comfortably, since she does not have a stable music stand for her piano, causing her to slouch to read music. The combination of these two problems discourages our client from playing for long periods of time (Figure 1).
Our design, Zugnoni's Zen Piano Palace (Z2P2), solves the problem of our client not being able to play comfortably. Our setup allows for the user to play her piano at her ideal height and includes a music stand sturdy enough to withstand the weight of an iPad and other sheet music (within reason) she may utilize.
This report describes the users, requirements, and specifications of the piano and music stand and explains its design and rationale. It also addresses limitations and further modifications to the design.
