Executive Summary
Problem
The problem we were tasked with solving was to create a piano stand that would accommodate the height of the user, Dr. Michele Zugnoni. Furthermore, we were tasked with creating a sturdy music stand that would be adjustable and would support the weight of Dr. Zugnoni's iPad, iPhone, and sheet music.
Purpose and Scope
The intention of this project is to design a functioning piano stand and music stand that allows the user to play her piano comfortably and safely. This solution would prevent any instability in the structural composition of the piano stand and music stand, as well as provide an aesthetically pleasing and comfortable piano-playing setup.
Methodology
After conducting secondary research on currently existing solutions and comfortable piano playing positions, the team then went on to conduct primary research by observing the user's current set-up and interviewing the user regarding her preferences for the final design. Furthermore, the team tested pianos on campus to research the ideal playing position/height for the piano stand. In addition, the team consulted with instructors, discussed possible ideas with peers, and contacted the shop experts in order to fine-tune the overall design.
Summary
Zugnoni’s Zen Piano Palace (Z2P2) can be divided into two main components: the wooden desk, which serves as the piano stand, and the music stand attached to the back panel of the piano stand. The piano stand is made out of wood with a Moroccan-red stain and a lacquer finish. It is supported by four wooden legs that all have the same finish as the top of the piano stand. This aspect of the design allows the user to play her piano at a comfortable height on a piano stand that is sturdy and aesthetically pleasing.
The music stand, attached to the backboard of the piano stand allows the user to modify the angle of the music sheet/iPad/iPhone to four different orientations. The music stand is made out of wood and is given the same finish as the rest of the build.
Future Developments
In future iterations of the design, a possible change that can be made to the design is to add a cover on top of the piano stand to prevent the piano from collecting dust. Furthermore, a possible add-on to the design would be a drawer/small storage area to store music accessories, such as additional sheet music.
