We conducted interviews with two families from Venezuela, as well as spoke with Principal Parra from Carl E. Vonne Elementary School, and gathered information and personal stories regarding the migrant's stories, experiences, resources, and needs as they are beginning to settle down in Chicago. These interviews allowed for us to hold conversations and gain knowledge on the situation from those who are personally going through it.
After conducting the interviews, we thematically coded our responses to find areas for improvement based on what the migrants told us about their experience. Denoting key words and phrases that were said allows us to bring together the common themes within the responses and locate where the issues lie. We also did the same process with answers regarding why the migrants left their home country in the first place so we can figure out what we can provide here in Chicago that they lacked in their home country.
Throughout the entire quarter, we conducted research online based on news articles, dashboards, and other sources of information to stay updated on the current migration situation and how Chicago is helping.
