Demonstrate the ability to integrate pedagogical approaches and educational technologies in practical classroom teaching and training as well as the ability to reflect on the effective application of technology-supported pedagogical approaches.
This annotated bibliography centers on communities of practice, a model advocated by educational psychologist Etienne Wenger. The resources selected for this bibliography reflect recent scholarship on communities of practice and how libraries have integrated communities of practice. This bibliography supports PLO 2 by integrating a reflective approach to learning about integrating communities of practice in practical classroom teaching and training students. This provides me a body of theoretical scholarship and practical applications to draw from for future communities of practice I hope to implement in my professional practice.
This discussion post discusses the social science of learning, and how students should be motivated to learn based on what interests them individually, rather than what is the most efficient means of educating students as a collective body. This discussion post demonstrates mastery of PLO 2 by discussing and reflecting on how students are motivated to learn from a social as well as a technologically-supported approach. This demonstrates an interest in the social constructionist approach which I believe will be most effective in creating learner-centered and individualized instruction in future library courses I will create in my professional practice.
This post explores how Mezirow's Transformative learning perspective is integrated into adult education and how it is informed by the socio-cultural background of learners. This demonstrates mastery of PLO 2 by focusing on how a particular pedagogical approach is integrated into classroom teaching and/or training. Particular stress is given to the development of new knowledge on top of existing knowledge. This post explores how Mezirow's theory meets the 10 definitions of learning. This posting enhanced my understanding of how theoretical perspectives meet learning occurring in real life environments, such as libraries.
This infographic supports PLO 2 by exploring the three core components of self determination theory, and how this relates to the technology-supported approach of gamified learning, and creating feelings of accomplishment in the learner. This is applicable to gamified learning modules I could create to help students in an information literacy course, so that they are more motivated in their learning.
This paper explores the communities of practice model as implemented in academic library settings, including how it can be implemented in the fields of reference, library instruction, problem-based learning, and embedded librarianship. Writing this paper helped me explore further how communities of practice is not only applicable to libraries, but specific areas of librarianship where the model can be implemented. Particularly as this paper focuses on embedded librarianship and virtual reference and virtual library instruction, this paper demonstrates an understanding of the principles discussed in PLO 2 by focusing on technology-supported implementation of the communities of practice approach. This paper is one I will look back at when I look at how to implement the communities of practice model in my professional practice.
