JANEAL GROSINGER - EDTECH 541
For this assignment we are working on a lesson that makes use of a shared doc. Below I have listed the goals of lesson and the complex concepts students will understand through using a shared doc. I have also provided a description of how my lesson will ask learners to collaborate using a shared doc. Finally, I have created a working sample which my learners can use.
Grade: 3rd Content Area: Reading Comprehension
The purpose of this lesson is to help students identify different characters within a story – what a character is and where you find it in a story. Next, students will identify different examples of character traits. By doing this correctly, the students will be able to understand the written text and convey ideas and information correctly and in a logical order.
Having just completed reading Because of Winn-Dixie together as a class; the teacher will use think-aloud to talk to the students about what a character in a book is. The teacher will think-aloud what a character trait is and give some examples of how you know it is a trait of the specific character. The teacher will explain to the students in a think-aloud about an example (or evidence) in the book that leads her to believe the trait is descriptive of this character.
The teacher will use a Smartboard or overhead projector to display the Character Traits Word List.
Teacher will ask the students to work together on Google Docs in groups of 4 students to create a list of examples of which words may be used to describe the character from the story yesterday. The students will find a list of suggested words on the Google Doc.
Each group of students will be assigned a different character to describe.
Students will work in the groups to come up with at least 2-character traits for one of the characters in yesterday’s story. They will add their traits to the Google Doc worksheet.
Each student will also write an example from the story in their section of the Google Doc table to explain why they think that character trait is correct for that certain character.
Each student will explain how the character contributed to the story by completing their section of the Google Doc table.
Each student will research the internet for a picture of a dog that best represents the dog in Winn-Dixie.
Students will work collaboratively on the Google Doc to complete the tables and questions. Students will use the "Suggesting" and "Comment" functions to work collaboratively with the other students on their team.
Students are welcome to insert more rows to the tables if they find additional traits they would like to add.
Before sharing their doc with the teacher, the students on the team will work together to assure that all parts of the doc has been completed.
Students who demonstrate understanding of the characters can:
Describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and/or explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events.
Identify character traits , motivations or feelings
List evidence of each trait
Explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events
Students will demonstrate understanding of the complex concepts of Google Docs when they:
Work on a Google doc at the same time (simultaneously) as another student
Understand that information added to Google Doc is saved automatically
Explain to another student how collaboration between students is completed through entries and comments within Google Docs
Highlight words within a Google Doc
Insert words within a Google doc
Insert words in a table to answer questions.
Insert picture within a Google doc
work on the document simultaneously as other students in their group
ask other students questions using the "suggesting" mode
comment on their entries by using the "comment" function
select a highlight color that is unique to them and not used by other students on the team
edit the document by entering their answers into the correct section of the table
The Google Docs webpage will be used to answer all questions for this lesson.
