Reinforcing Foundations for Change

The United Nations (UN) adopted the Universal Declaration for Human Rights in 1945, helping to ensure people across the globe enjoy basic freedoms that are naturally inherited from birth. Although many countries currently recognize and uphold these natural freedoms, various countries and their governmental bodies violate these rights of their citizens.

This is a great way to start getting students involved on a global scale and to introduce them to worldwide issues they may not be familiar with. Students will start with more questions than answers and may be asking themselves: Who is responsible for demanding justice? Is it up to a global council to demand change or should responsibility solely lie within the hands of the persecuted? What methods should be used to combat these violations, and would violence be acceptable if it's to protect natural privileges? Is enough being done to protect the innocence?

This activity aims to get students to find answers to these questions, encouraging them to explore the idea of global morality, and to develop and propose meaningful solutions to an authentic audience.
