Reflection
Students:
KWL Chart: At the end of every section, the students will fill out the L section of the KWL chart to reflect on what they learned during that section of the project. You can find the KWL Chart on the Instructor Resources page.
Understanding Check-In: At the beginning of the project, the teacher will introduce Understanding Check-In. After every new lesson or content that gets covered, the teacher will ask the students to show her their Understanding Check-In sign. The thumbs up means that they understand. The sideways thumb means they are a little confused and need help. The thumbs down means they do not understand and need help. The teacher will use these signs from the students to determine if more or how much more time needs to be spent on that topic. You can find the Understanding Check-In poster on the Instructor Resources page.
Student Reflections: At the end of each project section, before moving on to the next one, the student will fill out a student reflection survey about the section they just covered to see if they retained any information. You can find these reflection sheets on the Instructor Resources page.
Final Project Collaboration Reflection: After the culminating activity is finished, the students will reflect on how they worked in a group setting. You can find the Final Project Collaboration Reflection on the Instructor Resources page.
Teachers:
Journal: The teacher will keep a log of what they are noticing and things they might be able to adjust along the way.
The 3 R's Framework: At the end of the project, the teacher will reflect on the project as a whole by filling out The 3 R's Worksheet. (Teachers are also more than welcome to do this after each project section.) They will write down what worked, what needs some tweaking to work, and what did not work. This teacher tool was inspired by a tool from the teacher toolkit from Roots and Wings Kindergarten. You can find this worksheet on the Instructor Resources page.
Culminating Activity
At the end of this project, the students will present their books to their desired audience. Earlier in the project, the students choose to either have this presentation open to just parents of the classroom or open to the school. Each group will have a station with their book on display and some of the works they've done along the way, such as writing drafts, the illustrations they made, and pictures the teachers took of the students completing the project. Then at the end of the event, there will be a reading of all the books made.
