In this activity we will explore personal narrative writing and various pre-writing methods to help you successfully tell your story. Everyone has their favorite story to tell when they are hanging out with friends or getting to know someone. A personal narrative is a story from your personal experience and is written in the first person. The story should be written to have an emotional impact on the reader; be it funny, sad, inspiring, etc. As we explore the activities linked below we will look at the best ways to plan your writing so that you have a focused and organized story about a specific event or idea. In this lesson you will learn:
In this activity you will explore the fundamentals of story telling to activate your background knowledge and explore the elements of narratives such as narration, context, point of view, and chronology.
In this activity you will utilize the understanding of the elements you gained in the Nearpod activity to create a Mind Map for the story you are going to write. Follow the link below and create a graphic organizer in Popplet that narrows down and focuses the story you want to tell. Make sure to create a bubble and sub-bubbles for each of the key elements of a narrative listed in the lesson.
In this activity you will work through a LearnZillion Activity that will show you how to create a timeline to improve your personal narrative and remember important details. Writing without using supporting details makes the story have less impact on the reader. After you have completed the LearnZillion lesson use the Timeline link below it to create a timeline for your personal narrative. Be sure and follow the guidelines from the lesson about eliminating things that are not important to the story and filling in the missing important details.
In this activity you will use a collage maker to create a personal narrative collage to accompany your writing. This should be a creative collection of images that relate to your story. These can be personal photos or photos that are representative of the people, places, or ideas in your story. Please be creative and thoughtful as you create your collage.
In this activity you will revise your personal narrative by working through a revision checklist. This checklist looks at both the content of your narrative and the basics of format, spelling, and grammar. Please watch the video Revising Personal Narratives to the left and then follow the link below to the Personal Narrative Revision Checklist and work through it accordingly.
