The Verbal Assessment is the second part of our assessment process. The purpose of the verbal assessment is to demonstrate the Mathnasium method and determine a student's math ability level.
Ask questions found in the General Assessment Outline (in Enrollments folder in Shared Drive)
Demonstrate the Mathnasium Method by asking students "how did you get that?" and discussing correct and incorrect answers
Take note of any difficulties the student is have during the assessment (low confidence, finger counting, lack of multiplication fluency, etc.)
At the end, let them know that you are done asking them questions and that you are going to start them on a written assessment
Hand the parent a Registration Form (foun in Enrollment Folder of Shared Drive) and have them start filling it out
(This is a great time to ask the student for their math teacher's name so it doesn't get skipped in the form!)
Tell the parent that you are going to start the student on a written assessment out in the center, and that you will come back to talk with them in a moment
Assign and print an assessment using the Giving Written Assessments guide linked above
Lead the student out to an empty spot in the center and find them a seat
Remind them again that this is an assessment, NOT a test
Answer as many questions as they can
They are able to skip problems if needed
They can take a break if needed
No time limit
Remind them that you will be there to check in and answer questions later on
Tell them to bring the assessment to you when finished
