The Welcome is the first step in our assessment process. The purpose of the welcome is to build rapport and learn what brings a family to Mathnasium.
Introduce yourself to the parent and student
Invite them into your office and offer them a seat
It's best practice to have reviewed the assessment details beforehand so you know the names of those coming in to see you! Helps make a great first impression!
Ask the parent what brings them into Mathnasium
Give the parent a chance to talk as they won't get another opportunity for a while
If the parent does not provide a lot of information, ask them additional questions such as...
How long has math been difficult?
What does homework time look like?
How are tests going?
Reiterate the parent's concerns and reassure them that we are able to help!
Build rapport with the student by asking them some 'get to know you' questions such as...
What's your favorite subject at school?
What do you do for fun?
What's your favorite book/show/movie/game?
Have you heard about Mathnasium before?
How do you feel about math?
This step is vital in making sure the student feels comfortable during the assessment. It will also help with student buy-in in the long run!
Turn towards the student and let them know that you are going to ask them some math questions
Remind them that this is NOT a test but an assessment. There is no grade, time limit, expectations, etc.
Let them know that you'll start easy then move onto tougher questions as you go!
Doing this well also signals the parent that it's time for them to be quiet
