A folder for each of the 4 domains, 17 NCHL competencies (with the program target achievement levels [A=Advance, I=Intermediate, B=Basic] identified) is provided in this section. To complete this section requires two steps. See both outlined below.
Before you start this section and as you update during your time as an HCA student, it is important to note that this section is NOT asking you to upload every assignment you complete in every class. Instead, we are asking you to be thoughtful and create a series of course work/assignments that represents your progress (or lack of) towards the competencies at the Program target level (Basic >to> Intermediate >to> Advance) .
STEP 1. Add links to documents (stored in your "Portfolio" Google Drive folder) or the documents themselves that serve as an artifact or evidence of your achievement of the Program competencies at the Basic (B), Intermediate (I) or Advance (A) levels in the appropriate folder.
You are encouraged to access the dynamic MHA Competency Model and the Understanding MHA Program Competency Assessments documents found in ALL HCA CORE COURSES. See the module titled, MHA PROGRAM ASSESSMENT of NCHL COMPETENCIES.
Coursework you should consider using includes the following:
Graded assignments, projects, papers, or presentations from HCA courses. If you do not have the graded copy, provide the copy you turned in. Make sure you include elective courses and those that support an emphasis area.
Emails, comments, notes from professors, peers; supervisors or colleagues
Other items that serve as evidence of your competency achievement
Do not add Competency Rubrics in this folder. These belong in Section 3.
STEP 2: For each link to a document in your Google Drive or the document you provide as evidence you MUST provide a reflective statement. Please review this linked VIDEO* for more guidance on how to reflect in an academic setting and review Part 2 of the HCA Portfolio Scoring Rubric available in the HCA Student Portfolio Handbook. Links or documents without a reflective statement will not be reviewed or count towards your Portfolio grade:
*Video URL: (https://youtu.be/SntBj0FIApw?si=dmCGPHxkTBaHE8XF) Note: The video resource is provided to help students learn to write reflectively. It isn't an exact fit to the portfolio assignment. You are not asked to write a paper for each document but a shorter statement. Consider using the DIEP model presented but, write one sentence for each letter instead of a paragraph. You are also not asked to link theory within your statement.

While completing this assignment, I felt more panicked on the first attempt. However, I have increased my score to 88.50 since there is a chance of a second attempt. This attempt showed growth in my ability to synthesize epidemiological data, interpret findings, and communicate effectively within a structured academic framework. I gained deeper insight into the real-world implications of epidemiological research. Overall, the case study taught me to interpret the data of population and health policy. Moving forward, my goal is to develop my analytical and critical thinking continuously.

This is the last project of my first semester assigned in a group to complete it. Working on the group project for our course was a valuable experience that allowed me to grow both academically and professionally. Collaborating with a diverse team of classmates, each bringing unique strengths to the table, highlighted the importance of communication, flexibility, and shared accountability. During the project, we encountered different challenges like scheduling, dividing work responsibility, and active communication. However, we established our workflows through shared drive, Zoom meetings, and GroupMe. One of the experiences I gained from this project was learning how to manage and adapt to different thinking and working styles. I am very happy with my team performance, and this experience has equipped me with practical skills in teamwork, conflict resolution, and academic collaboration that I will carry forward into future courses and professional settings.

Reflective Statement: While working on the project and discussion board, I faced a communication gap due to variances in team members' schedules and interpreting my classmates' communication language. I learned how to communicate my perspective, thinking, and ideas transparently. Reading my classmates' posts and responding to them thoughtfully helped me understand my communication skills and problems. I especially appreciated learning how emotional intelligence and active listening can bridge gaps and foster more inclusive and effective dialogue. As a future healthcare professional, I gained more confidence in communication and improved delivery in dialogue with my team members, colleagues, and patients.

Reflective Statement: While working on this project, I explored the concept of strategic orientation and its significance in healthcare leadership and organizational planning. This project was educational research that guided me to realize how strategic orientation is the foundation for decision-making and long-term success in healthcare settings. I found that developing a strategic orientation is not as easy as we thought; it takes effort, time, collaboration, and involvement of all team members and stakeholders. I aim to engage in more case-based learning and perhaps seek mentorship from professionals with experience in strategic healthcare leadership to build these skills effectively in the future.
