Minerva's Market Survey
Research Questions
1) What are the demographic and social characteristics of the population of TWU students that use Minerva's Market?
2) What does the population use outside of Minerva's Market to meet their needs?
3) Is this population satisfied with CARE food services? If not, what could CARE change to better accommodate them?
Methods
An in-person survey at Minerva’s Market was conducted to determine what subgroups of students use Minerva’s Market, how satisfied they are, and what could be changed to better accommodate their needs. The student researcher administered survey from the week of February 13th 2023 to the week of March 6th 2023. Results were analyzed using Excel statistical analysis.
Results
In February of 2023 there were about 91 patrons using Minerva’s Market. Out of those 91 patrons the student researcher surveyed 23 (25% participation rate).
More juniors, 18-19 year olds, and commuters participated. Many identified as being Asian or Hispanic.
Most participants indicated that they were first generation college students and did not have any other benefits that could get them free or reduced cost food items.
The satisfaction rating for the Market and its foods was high but many requested more protein items, fresh and frozen produce, microwavable meals, and snacks.
Many indicated not having a meal plan; among those with meal plans, commuter 40 plans were more common.
Financial instability was the biggest reason why people choose to come to the Market.
Responses about the lack of transportation and limited hours when open matched other studies done on TWU college food insecurity.
