Here are our top 5 tips for advocating for yourself at your new job.
Always speak up when it comes to safety and/or discrimination
If an activity your supervisor is asking you to do feels unsafe, speak up.
If they don't take your concerns seriously go over their heads.
Request additional safety equipment if necessary.
If someone is harassing you, report it.
Many jobs have a method of raising concerns anonymously.
Be curious and motivated, ask to be more involved
The best way to stand out and get noticed is to show your supervisor that you are curious and motivated.
If you want to be involved at a higher level or be given more advanced tasks, ask for them.
If your supervisor isn't the one reviewing you work be sure to show it to them.
Talk to coworkers and find a mentor
The best way to know that you are being treated fairly at work is to talk to coworkers.
Don't be afraid to ask questions.
Try to find a mentor you can connect with, especially if you don't work frequently with your supervisor.
Be communicative about your workload
Speak up if you are being overloaded, especially if it is causing you to do sub-par work.
Be honest if you don't have enough work, chances are someone above you is already noticing. Asking for more work shows initiative.
Always ask for directions if you are unsure of how to complete a new task. Following directions and doing a good job the first time = good. Trying to figure it out on your own and maybe messing stuff up = bad.
Pick your battles
Everything at your new job is not going to be perfect, but it should be good enough that you can get your work done well and safely.
Know when to put your foot down but try not to argue about everything.
It is acceptable to make demands about things like safety and reasonable accommodations. Complaining about your chair or the snacks in the break room might not be the right battle.
