Our school's English Virtual-Reality Situational Learning focuses on the aiport and convenience store scenarios. From checking in to boarding in an airport, and buying things in a convenience store, students will have first-hand experiences of the processes and be aware of the terms used in these events in English. Thus, this opportunity will greatly help students on building up their vocabularies and confidence in English.
Aside from this immersive situational learnings, students will also have an opportunity to sharpen their listening skills, phonetic awareness, and spelling skills in a very fun way.
As merely facilitators, we are guiding the students on how to use this technology, its hardware and software, and monitor their progress.
Some English Activities in School
Some students are more advanced compared to others. They easily get bored in the class sometimes. As part of their English after-class session, I take an hour to talk to them. The purpose of this session is just to have fun and converse in English while playing; no heavy works for them just a casual conversation to practice their speaking skills. Most of the time when we do not play games, I incorporate stories so we have something to talk about.
Chosen students are asked to record an announcement which will be aired on different breaktimes in school. These recorded announcements are about cleaning-up, proper hygiene, taking lunch, and reminders when class dismissal. We change the students whom to take the role every semester for fair chances to all.
Every Wednesday and Friday, during their nap time once a week, I call out the attention of those students who find the daily English lessons more challenging than the others. These students require a thorough assistance when it comes to coping with the lessons. I provide learning materials that will greatly support their learnings. Knowing their disadavantages from the rest is the key to helping them.
It's an another initiative toward being a bilingual country by the government to have an interactive online platform of learning English like Cool English. Students' skills in reading, wiriting, listening, and speaking are assessed in this program. As a Foreign teacher, I assist the students for their questions and concerns.
Every Friday, my English co-teacher and I take in-charge of a 30-minute activity for the whole school. We discuss special holidays, current news, and to-do activities. We sometimes present performances of the students for everyone to see. This activity is done in both Mandarin and English languages.
Students learn best when lessons are incorporated with games. They like to play so before the beginning or after the lesson, we ask them to participate in games. These games hold the promise of learning while having fun.
