Junior League of Reading

The Junior League of Reading, PA, Inc. (JLR) established a scholarship for young women in the

greater Berks County area who have exhibited exemplary leadership skills within their

community. Eligible applicants must have graduated, or will be graduating in the Spring of 2021,

from a Berks County public or private high school, and plan to continue their education at a

college, university, vocational school, or professional school (an “Educational Institution”).

Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale) to be considered for

this scholarship.

The scholarship is for tuition only . "Tuition" means the cost of instruction and includes

required course-related lab fees and unbundled fees such as Technology Fees, Instructional

Fees, Student Activity Fees, and Student Service Fees. “Tuition” does not include room and

board, the cost of books and supplies, and the cost of transportation to and from the applicable

Educational Institution.

The Scholarship is for $5,000.00 and is paid directly to the Educational Institution at which the

applicant is enrolled. In the event that the $5,000.00 Scholarship exceeds the tuition for the

semester for which the Scholarship is awarded, any excess Scholarship money can be applied

to the next semester [or summer session] provided that the Scholarship recipient maintains a

2.0 GPA. If the Scholarship recipient does not exceed the tuition for the semester, or there are

remaining scholarship proceeds after paying the tuition for two semesters, the remaining

Scholarship proceeds must be returned to The Junior League of Reading, PA, Inc.

The deadline for submission of this application and all supporting materials is Friday,

March 26, 2021. This deadline will not be extended for any reason.

Who May Apply for a Junior League of Reading, PA, Inc. Scholarship?

To be eligible for a JLR Scholarship, an applicant must:

● Be enrolled in, or be a graduate of, a public or private high school located in Berks

County, Pennsylvania;

● Be enrolled as a student in a college, university, or professional school, or accepted or

has the intention of being enrolled for Fall 2021;

● If she has already completed just one year of college, has attained a cumulative GPA of

at least 2.0 , or If she has completed more than one year of college and has attained a

cumulative GPA of at least 2.3 ;

● Be unrelated to any member of the Junior League of Reading, PA, Inc.

● No later than March 26, 2021, complete and submit this application and all supporting

materials to the Junior League of Reading, Pa Inc. at the address appearing at the

bottom of this page

What Else is Required for Applicants Still in High School?

If you are a high school student who has not yet attended college, you are required to submit, in

addition to this application:

1. A writing sample, describing participation in any leadership training(s) and how that

experience(s) has supported the efforts you made to improve your community;

2. A letter of recommendation from your high school principal, your high school counselor,

or teacher;

3. A letter of recommendation from an adult (non-Junior League active/sustainer member)

in a leadership role from an outside organization that worked with you at least one year;

4. A certified transcript of your high school record;

5. If already accepted for Fall 2021, a copy of your acceptance by the college, university or

professional school for which you are requesting the Scholarship

What Else is Required for Applicants Who Are Already Attending College?

If you have graduated from high school and are attending college, in addition to this application

you are required to submit:

1. A certified transcript of your high school record;

2. A writing sample, describing participation in any leadership training(s) and how that

experience(s) has supported the efforts you made to improve your community;

3. A letter of recommendation from an adult (non-Junior League active/sustainer Member)

in a leadership role from an outside organization that worked with you at least one year;

4. A letter of recommendation from your college faculty advisor;

5. A certified transcript of your college record;

6. The college's certification that you are currently enrolled as a student and in good

standing.
