Our Purpose
In TUSD, AI is not about automation—it’s about amplifying human potential. By grounding AI use in our Portrait of a Graduate, we ensure students are not only prepared for future technologies, but are also compassionate communicators, ethical leaders, engaged citizens, lifelong learners, and healthy, balanced individuals.
AI in TUSD: Supporting the Portrait of a Graduate
Torrance Unified’s approach to AI is intentionally aligned with our Portrait of a Graduate, ensuring that technology enhances—not replaces—human learning, connection, and purpose. When used thoughtfully, AI becomes a powerful tool that helps students grow across all five PoG competencies while developing curiosity, responsibility, and confidence in an evolving world.
Growth Mindset & Lifelong Learning
AI invites students to explore ideas, ask deeper questions, and iterate on their thinking. By using AI for feedback, brainstorming, and inquiry, students learn to embrace challenges, reflect on mistakes, and see learning as a continuous journey while building resilience and curiosity that extend beyond the classroom.
Communication & Collaboration
AI supports students in clarifying their thinking, refining their writing, and preparing for meaningful discussions. When paired with collaborative learning, AI helps students articulate ideas more effectively, listen to diverse perspectives, and engage in respectful dialogue—strengthening relationships and teamwork.
Leadership & Character
Through guided AI use, students practice ethical decision-making, integrity, and responsibility. They learn to evaluate information, consider bias, and use AI transparently and purposefully—developing the character and leadership skills needed to positively influence others.
Civic Engagement & Global Citizenship
AI opens doors to global perspectives, current issues, and civic problem-solving. Students can research community challenges, explore multiple viewpoints, and design solutions that promote equity and inclusion—empowering them to contribute thoughtfully to their communities and the wider world.
Healthy Habits & Life Skills
By mindfully integrating AI, students learn balance, self-regulation, and digital well-being. They practice using AI as a support rather than a substitute, building habits that promote independence, critical thinking, and long-term personal and academic wellness.
