Day 8 - 8/29/2018 - Traveling to Seward

Today's Weather: High 64, Low 52, sunny with light breezes. Perfect for traveling.

We left Homer this morning and headed back north along the Cook Inlet enjoying all the beautiful sights we missed on our drive south in the fog and rain. Our first stop was at Deep Creek Beach on the shores of Cook Inlet where we were treated to awesome views of Mt. Iliamna and Mt. Redoubt. Our timing was perfect to watch a beach tractor launch a few fishing boats. The boat trailers were hooked to the tractor and were backed into the water until they were able to float and sail away.

Our next stop was at the Holy Transfiguration of Our Lord Chapel, a historic Russian Orthodox church near the village of Ninilchik. The little fishing village was colonized by Russian fur traders. It is an old-world setting with quaint fishermen’s cottages and log homes.

We arrived at Soldotna around lunch time and of course we had to stop at the Moose is Loose bakery for an apple fritter.

When we drove through Cooper Landing we stopped for some great views of Kenai River and Kenai Lake.

We then headed south on the Seward Highway to the little town of Moose Pass. The story is that the town got its name when a moose got in the way of a mail carrier’s dog team. One of the locals built a giant waterwheel with a sharpening stone attached to it. A sign nearby reads: Moose Pass is a peaceful little town. If you have an axe to grind, do it here.

After arriving in Seward we took a short walk along Resurrection Bay before checking into Bell in the Woods B&B which is nestled in a wooded residential setting just outside town. We had dinner at Thorn’s Showcase Lounge where we shared a bucket of butt……halibut that is!
