Instructor: Ms. Cherri Richman – School Phone 918-746-8551

Edison Preparatory School

Monday – Friday - Room 151

Course Description: Computer Literacy BASICS: A Comprehensive Guide to IC3 provides complete coverage of topics for the new Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC3) and is approved by Certiport Inc. IC3 standards and skills are listed and explained in an appendix and on the pages where they are discussed. All objectives from the three modules are presented to provide preparation for the IC3 exam.

Objective: To prepare the student for the world of work with skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary for success in a business setting, and to prepare the student for further study of computer and business.

Philosophy of Education: Every child can learn and it should be a team effort between the instructor and student. The teacher’s responsibilities are (1) to provide an emotionally and physically safe learning environment, (2) to understand that each student is an individual with different needs and learning styles and to treat each child with respect, (3) to prepare challenging and informative lessons to teach course objectives, (4) to stay current on new information and techniques in the course subject mater, and (5) to be available and open to all requests for help. The student’s responsibilities are: (1) to be present and on time, (2) to be attentive to instruction and stay on task, (3) to turn work in by specified deadlines, (4) to behave in a manner which is not disruptive or disrespectful of others, or interfere with learning, and (5) to work independently as much as possible, but ask for help from the instructor or other students when necessary.

Goal: An important goal is for each student to pass the Computer Fundamentals or Computer Literacy test that is required by the OK State Department of Career and Technology Education. Each student will take this test. This will be a benefit to the student on resumes or job applications and keying documents for other classes at Edison Preparatory School. At the beginning and ending of a unit, the student will take an assessment related to the information taught in class.

Grading: Grades will be based on total number of points for the semester. Included will be points for assignments, assessments, projects and class participation.

90 – 100 = A

80 – 89 = B

70 – 79 = C

60 – 69 = D

Below 60 = F

Cheating: Students caught cheating or copying someone’s work will be assessed a “1” in the gradebook to denote the assignment CAN NOT be made up.

Supplies: The student will need a pen/pencil and paper everyday for taking notes in class or taking a test. Each student will be expected to purchase a thumb/flash drive at the beginning of the year. It is the student’s responsibility to keep up with this drive. Students will save all of their work to this drive. If it is lost/stolen, it is the student’s responsibility to purchase another one. This is a requirement for this class. Students may not save games or music to their flashdrive and bring it to class. This is a way for viruses to infect our TPS computers. Students can save to Google Drive, but the documents do not save in the same format as MS Office and could be lost. Saving in 2 places is always a good idea.

Attendance and Lateness: It is important that you be in class and on time. Students who arrive late disturb the class, but more importantly miss out on critical information. It is the student’s responsibility to catch up with the class when they come to class late. If I am absent from class, the students will be given specific assignments and are expected to complete them and turn in to the substitute. If they do not turn in the assignment, they will not be allowed to make up the work and will receive a “2” in the gradebook.

Class Participation: If students are to learn to apply, analyze, synthesize, etc. they need to be active in class participation. A grade will be assessed on participation and attitude.

Discipline: All rules of Tulsa Public Schools and Edison Preparatory School, as found in the student handbook, will be enforced in this class. For infraction of any class or school rule during this class time, discipline will be as follows:

First offense: student will receive a verbal warning.

Second offense: student will receive a written warning along with a call to the parent.

Third offense: student will receive a referral to the discipline office.

Any student that disrupts the class to the point that it hinders the instructor’s ability to effectively teach or hinder the learning of other students will receive an immediate referral and removal from the classroom.

Computer Use: All students must adhere to District Policies and Regulations dealing with use and misuse of computers and the Internet.

Cell Phones/Backpacks: Career Tech classes are unique in that there will be times when students are allowed to use their cell phones in class for specific assignments. If a student is using a cell phone during other times, it will be confiscated and given to the Dean of Students. If this happens, a parent will have to pick up the phone from the Dean of Students. NO backpacks will be allowed in or outside the room. You will need to have a locker and store your backpack there.

Gum, Food and Drink: Please DO NOT bring food or drinks into the lab or chew gum during class. NO EXCEPTIONS!!
