Edison Preparatory School

Course Description: Fundamentals of Administrative Technologies:
Objective: This course will provide students with the fundamental concepts, principles, and ideas needed to understand how business is operated and managed in a rapidly changing global environment, which is needed for success in careers in business related fields.
Philosophy of Education: Every child can learn and it should be a team effort between the instructor and student. The teacher’s responsibilities are (1) to provide an emotionally and physically safe learning environment, (2) to understand that each student is an individual with different needs and learning styles and to treat each child with respect, (3) to prepare challenging and informative lessons to teach course objectives, (4) to stay current on new information and techniques in the course subject mater, and (5) to be available and open to all requests for help. The student’s responsibilities are: (1) to be present and on time, (2) to be attentive to instruction and stay on task, (3) to turn work in by specified deadlines, (4) to behave in a manner which is not disruptive or disrespectful of others, or interfere with learning, and (5) to work independently as much as possible, but ask for help from the instructor or other students when necessary.
Goal: An important goal is for each student to pass the Microsoft Office tests (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Telephone Etiquette) that is required by the OK State Department of Career and Technology Education. Each student will take these tests. This will be a benefit to the student on resumes or job applications and keying documents for other classes at Edison High school. This class has a required Junior Achievement component. We will work closely with Junior Achievement and open a business that all students are required to work.
Grading: Grades will be based on total number of points for the semester. Included will be points for assignments, tests, projects and class participation.
90 – 100 = A
80 – 89 = B
70 – 79 = C
60 – 69 = D
Below 60 = F
Course Objectives:
1st Semester: Students will learn Financial Literacy, Office Procedures, Resume Writing, Interview Techniques and general information related to the business world. Junior Achievement will be presenting to this class along with other guests from the community.
2nd Semester: Students will learn advanced Microsoft Office terminology and procedures through book work and class projects related to the business world. Junior Achievement will be presenting to this class along with other guests from the community.
Supplies: Each student will be required to purchase a pair of earbuds. Each student will be required to purchase a thumb/flash drive for saving class work. It is their responsibility to keep up with their flashdrive. If lost, it is the student’s responsibility to purchase an additional drive. This is a REQUIRED supply for this class. Students are not allowed to bring games, music or video to class on their flashdrives due to viruses being spread to TPS equipment.
Attendance and Lateness: It is important that you be in class, in your seat, and on time. Students who arrive late disturb the class, but more importantly miss out on critical information. It is the student’s responsibility to catch up with the class when they come to class late. If I am absent from class, the students will be given specific assignments and are expected to complete them and turn in to the substitute. If they do not turn in the assignment, they will not be allowed to make up the work.
Class Participation: If students are to learn to apply, analyze, synthesize, etc. they need to be active in class participation. A grade will be assessed on participation and attitude.
Discipline: All rules of Tulsa Public Schools and Edison Preparatory School, as found in the student handbook, will be enforced in this class. For infraction of any class or school rule during this class time, discipline will be as follows:
Cheating: Students caught cheating or copying someone’s work will be assessed a “1” in the gradebook to denote the assignment CANNOT be made up. Students not doing assignments when instructor is absent will receive a “2” in the gradebook to denote the assignment CANNOT be made up.
Any student that disrupts the class to the point that it hinders the instructor’s ability to effectively teach or hinder the learning of other students will receive an immediate referral and removal from the classroom.
Computer Use: All students must adhere to District Policies and Regulations dealing with use and misuse of computers and the Internet.
Cell Phones\Backpacks: Career Tech classes are unique in that there will be times when students are allowed to use their cell phones in class for specific assignments. If a student is using a cell phone during other times, it will be confiscated and given to the Dean of Students. If this happens, a parent will have to pick up the phone from the Dean of Students. NO backpacks will be allowed in or outside the room. You will need to have a locker and store your backpack there.
Gum, Food and Drink: Please DO NOT bring food or drink into the lab or chew gum during class. NO EXCEPTIONS!!
