Expectations for Students - Professionalism

Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, and Hard Work

Key Mindsets

Don't make excuses, find solutions. Mistakes can pave the way for deeper understanding. Productive struggle is the optimal time for learning to occur.

Course Outline & Learning Expectations

This year, Edison’s 6th Grade Math Curriculum is based on the Tulsa Way Model and will be aligned to the 6th grade standards. This course is designed for students to go into 7th grade math the following school year. Students will be required to invest consistent time outside of class practicing concepts covered in class. This is primarily done through homework (on-line on the Big Ideas website and traditional paper-pencil assignments that are assigned most evenings) and by going over Formal Notes (taken in class). Students will be given a portion of class time to review homework and ask questions before taking it home to complete.

Unit Tests

The course content is broken down into units, as shown in the Course Outline. Each unit will have a test. Students will have a practice test available to them on Socrative.com to study the week prior to the exam. 5 Bonus points will be added onto their test score for taking the practice test. The procedure to take a practice quiz is always the same. Students will log on to Socrative.com. The room is always BROOKS132. They enter their Last Name, First Name and the practice test will begin. They may take the test as many times as they like, until they feel comfortable and confident with the material, but they will only earn 5 Bonus points.

Quiz Policy

Expect to have a quiz after covering 2-5 lessons, depending on the unit. The quiz day will be announced several days in advance and could incorporate any material previously covered in class or on the homework. A practice quiz will be available to students on Socrative.com the week of the quiz. 5 Bonus points will be added onto their quiz score for taking the practice quiz. The same instructions apply on Socrative practice quizzes, as practice unit tests (refer to unit test section).

No Retakes

Quiz grades are final. Therefore, it is very important that you study for the quiz. It is equally important that you pay attention in class and do your homework since the quiz will be over material covered in class and on the homework.

Cumulative Final

Math builds on itself. Therefore, the Semester Final will cover content from the entire first semester and the Final Exam will cover content from both semesters.

Homework

Homework is expected to be turned in on-time. Homework will be due the following school day at the beginning of the period unless otherwise specified. Show all calculations and work. I give credit for the mathematical process and answer. When you get confused about a problem, solve it as far as you can, then ask for help during Q & A at the beginning of the hour the next day

Homework assignments are posted weekly on my teacher website: https://sites.google.com/tulsaschools.org/brooks/home. Late work will have a one week grace period without penalty. After that week it may be turned in until the end of the quarter with a 50% penalty. Students who are absent will have up to two school-days to make up the HW assignment they missed for full credit. Grades are updated weekly on Powerschool.

HW Grading Policy

A homework grade will be an accurate reflection of the number of correct responses a student earned on an assignment. On the on-line textbook assignments, students will be given a minimum of two attempts to earn full credit on the problem. There are certain instances that I will take a participation grade on a homework assignment, but it is usually one where we go over the answers in class.

Student Responsibility

You are responsible for your own learning. That means making sure you know how to work the problems on your homework correctly. If you don't understand how to work certain problems, it is your own responsibility to find or ask for help.

Notes provided by the teacher will be in the student’s math notebook and should provide high quality examples for students to model on their homework. Students who are absent can copy any notes missed from a classmate or from the teacher’s notebook upon return.

In addition, all practice quizzes and tests on Socrative.com have a detailed explanation on how to find the correct solution for any missed problem. We will go over most assignments in class and any questions that students are struggling with can be addressed at that time. Tutoring is also available (see Tutoring Policy).

Absences/Make-up Work: When you return from an absence, you are responsible for the following:

  • Turning in any homework/make-up work that was due the day(s) of your absence. According to the school policy, you have as many days as you were absent to turn in missed assignments, however, you should turn in at least one make-up assignment as well as the current assignment each day until you are caught up.
  • Getting the homework assignments(s) you missed and updating your class notebook.
  • Talking with the teacher and setting up a day after school the next week to make-up a TEST or Quiz.

Daily Participation

There is a direct correlation between student attendance and learning. Therefore, it is essential that students show up to class daily. Participation points will be given to students for doing their bell work, taking notes, listening, answering questions, participating in group work and class discussions, and following directions. I will collect student notebooks periodically for a participation grade.

Tutoring Policy

I will be in my room after school most days, but I do not have a set schedule for tutoring. Please keep in mind that sometimes life events will cause me to have to leave immediately after school. Edison has a tutoring schedule set up with math teachers available before and after school. Tutoring will not be done during my planning period.

MAP Testing

Our district has adopted MAP (Measured Academic Progress) testing to measure student mastery and growth. The math portion of this test will be administered three times over the course of the year. Students and parents will be able to access results when they become available. It is important that students do their best on these tests so the resulting data reflects what they know and teachers can better assist in filling in learning gaps.

Classroom Rules - Building Toward Success

  • Respect supplies, instructional time, others and yourself.
  • Come to class daily on time and prepared with a math notebook, folder, loose paper, pencil, glue stick, hi-lighter and optional scissors.
  • No Food, Phones, Backpacks or Hoodies! (If you show up with a backpack or hoodie you will have to go put it up in your locker. If that makes you late to class you will receive a tardy.)
  • Raise your hand to ask and answer questions.
  • Do your best!

Cell Phones

Cell phones are not allowed to be used in class. These devices should be put away during the entire class period. We encourage parents to contact their child through the school in case of an emergency.

Earbuds

We will be using the chrome books in class sometimes for lesson enrichment. The programs we use include videos to help explain topics and problems. Please include earbuds in your personal supplies for class. This is the only time earbuds will be allowed in class.

Restroom Procedures

Each student will be given a total of 3 restroom passes for the semester marked in their planner. If they do not have their planner they will not be allowed to go, as their planner is their hall pass for every class. Students are advised to use the restroom during passing period and to reserve their passes for emergencies only as additional restroom passes will not be given. If a student feels that they will be late if they stop at the bathroom they should come to class first and ask me to go to the bathroom before the bell rings. They will then have an appropriate amount of grace time after the bell if needed. Students should not ask to go to the bathroom during the first or last fifteen minutes of class.

Daily Supplies Needed for Class

The following supplies are expected to be brought by students to class everyday: A math notebook used only for math, a pencil, a folder, loose paper for activities, a hi-lighter, a glue stick, and an optional pair of scissors. Calculators are available for use in class for those that do not have their own. These DO NOT leave the classroom.

Supplies to Donate

The following supplies may be brought in to help our class function more efficiently:

Kleenexes, Clorox Wipes, Copy Paper
