At Durham Elementary, the music and PE teacher work in close collaboration to create unique programs for each grade level. Mr. Silverman works with the students on the music portion of the program while Mrs. Megowan is responsible for the dance choreography. This holistic approach to learning instills curiosity and develops better communication and social skills. It fosters community. Using their creative skills, students connect better to the subjects. Learning becomes natural and engaging above and beyond the class room specific teaching.
After many weeks of practice during music and PE, students come together for a week of rehearsals in the cafeteria to finalize the performance. The result is an entertaining combination of music on different instruments (Orff, recorder, ukulele, Samba drums and voice) and dances with a variety of props (hats, ribbons, balls, and original creations).
