Decide on the program(s) and institution(s) of choice.
There are universities, universities of Applied Sciences and specialised Art, Music and Film schools to choose from.
You can search for programmes here.
Check the admission requirements of the university and entry requirements of the specific program. Many German universities require the equivalent of a German state-accredited Abitur qualification, a document issued to German secondary school students who have passed their final exams.
The final decision on admission always rests with the higher education institution at which you are applying. For that reason, you should always ask in advance whether you meet the requirements. Almost all universities have an International Office, or Akademisches Auslandsamt.
Aptitude tests: The TestAS is intended for international students who wish to apply for admission to an undergraduate degree programme at a Germany university. It measures the applicant’s general and subject-related aptitude necessary for completing such a programme successfully. You don’t require any specific knowledge or expertise about your subject of study when you take the test.
TestAS recognition varies from university to university. While the TestAS is an obligatory prerequisite for admission to some universities, others do not require it, but may recommend it.
Each university is permitted to determine how heavily to weight the TestAS results. Please inquire at the university (or faculty) of your choice as to whether the TestAS is considered in the admission decision.
Registration and test dates can be found here.
Research and confirm if there is a recommendation letter(s) requirement - if required, these must be request in May.
Check if knowledge of German language is needed for the programme you are applying to.
Check if the programme you are applying to has a Numerus Clausus. (it means there are only a limited number of places in the programme. And you must have a certain grade point average to be admitted.)
