All male Singapore citizens and Permanent Residents, upon reaching the age of 18, are called upon to serve with either the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), the Singapore Police Force (SPF), or the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). NS is a mandatory conscription and duty that every male citizen and PR must undertake upon attaining the age of 18.

Please note that, if you apply to university in Year 13 and are accepted, you will have to ask the university for a two-year deferral. All universities in Singapore permit two-year deferrals, and most US colleges do as well. UK and Canadian universities, on the other hand, rarely allow two-year deferrals, so you should plan to apply to universities in those countries only during your first or second year of National Service.
