The Deed of Integration Agreement, Section 5, states that the special character of the school is based on:

• The principles of tikanga ā Iwi through an emphasis on the teaching and learning of traditions and customs of ngā iwi o Tūranga: Rongowhakaata, Ngāi Tāmanuhiri and Te Aitanga ā Māhaki.

In giving effect to the special character the school will:

• Provide education that is developed and delivered for iwi by iwi; and

• Have a shared education vision with whanau, hapū and iwi working together to bring it to reality

Tūranga Tangata Rite is a unique iwi driven kura in which tikanga, the values, beliefs and history of the Iwi and hapū of Tūranganui a Kiwa and the wider takiwā of Tairāwhiti, is the foundation of the learning, growth and well-being of our tauira.
