The Indiana Academic Standards will serve as guidance for curriculum decisions. Materials used, activities, assignments and projects will facilitate mastery of these standards for second grade. You may find the standards for English/language arts here, for mathematics here, for science here, and social studies here.
Students will be assessed by the Indiana ILEARN four times this year, as well as by the Indiana IREAD in March.
*Note that the standards highlighted in grey are those students are expeted to have mastered by the end of the school year.
Much of the work we complete in class will be considered practice for mastery of skills and concepts. Any assignment considered practice will most often not be assigned a letter grade, but rather feedback to students about what they are doing well and what they can continue to do to stretch their thinking and work towards mastery. If an assignment comes home with only a checkmark at the top, it was for practice or done together as a whole class or during a small group meeting with me. You may sometimes see an assignment come home with a "C" for corrected next to some items. This indicates that I have done some reteaching of a skill with your child and they worked through the assignment again to correct previously missed items. While the TSC report card is designed to report letter grades, these do not always tell the whole story about a student's growth. Therefore, during our parent/teacher conferences much of our conversation will be about daily observations and checks for understanding, as well as more formal assessment data.
Our learning and practice will come in the form of hands-on activities, dialogue, games, and partner and small group work. Assessing progress each day in a variety of ways is formative assessment that helps me make informed instructional decisions based on students' needs.
Letter grades will be assigned to tests and quizzes, as well as on some writing pieces and other projects. Letter grade will be assigned to daily practice activities only if I feel students have had an adequate amount of time to learn the content.
TSC's Grading Scale
A = 100-90%
B = 89-80%
C = 79-70%
D = 69-60%
F = 59% and below
Personal Growth and Study Habits are assessed on each grading period's report card. Personal growth and study habits will be used to help students set intentions and goals each week.
The personal growth and study habits are graded on a four point scale
4 is mastery
3 is approaching mastery
2 is developing mastery
1 is needs improvement
The personal growth and study habits are as follows:
1. Works cooperatively with others.
2. Is respectful of others and property.
3. Puts forth best effort and perseverance in work.
4. Accepts and demonstrates responsibility.
5. Behaves with integrity while at school.
We will pack in a lot of learning throughout the school day. I would like most of the students' evenings to be a time to play outside, rest and/or participate in other activities, as well as enjoy family. Therefore, homework will be short and mostly involve reviewing our weekly word work (spelling) and vocabulary words in addition to some short math assignments. You will receive a sheet each Monday with the list of at home tasks for the week. If this work is divided up throughout the week, nothing sent home should take more than 15-20 minutes.
While students will have an opportunity each day to read their books in class, they may also bring them home to read. Work on trying to have your child include some independent reading throughout the week. Reading for pleasure should be viewed as a standard part of your child's daily routine, rather than homework. They may do this reading independently, but reading aloud to you will benefit them as well. Whether your child is reading independently, to you, or with you, be sure to engage them in conversation about what they are reading.
*Students will have a take home folder that is to travel back and forth each day between school and home. This is where you will find all homework as well as graded work and school flyers.
