Homework expectations are that students will read for 30-minutes a night, and finish any assignments that were not completed in the work time given at school. Students should not have much homework outside of this 30 minutes of reading, as I do give plenty of work time in class. If your child is coming home with a lot of homework, that is a sign that they are likely not using their work time appropriately and would benefit from additional reminders at home to stay on task and use their time wisely.
Assignments are posted on the board each day. Students have access to assignment sheets to write down their assignments daily. Assignments are also posted on a weekly digital assignment sheet that students can access through Google Classroom (at school and at home). As 4th and 5th graders, it is their responsibility to be sure they know what their homework is and to be sure to meet due dates and deadlines.
I will make note in PowerSchool when a student has a missing assignment and put a zero in for the grade. This often prompts students to turn in forgotten work! Late work will be accepted for one week only. Past that point, the zero remains in the gradebook for that assignment. Students soon learn that a zero is very difficult to rebound from and it is vital to get assignments turned in.
I am working to help prepare students for the demands and expectations of middle school, and these practices and policies are stepping stones to do that.
