My classroom utilizes a mini-economy in its behavior management plan. This allows students to earn ‘money’ for positive choices, while having a consequence of having to pay ‘money’ for poor choices.
A few ways students can earn money:
Coming to school
Turning in homework
Making exceptional choices during work time
Demonstrating the 7 Habits during difficult times
A few ways students can lose money:
Talking in the hallway and other “silent zones”
Missing homework/project deadlines
Not following class rules/procedures/expectations
Not utilizing the 7 Habits
Students can then spend their classroom money at the classroom store, for fun classroom privileges like Broom Flight Class or trips to the Leaky Cauldron, and at an end-of-the-year auction. Students will see natural consequences in place, as those students that have been making good choices will have more money, and thus more activities/opportunities/options available to them.
