Grades will come from a combination of participation, tests/quizzes, in-class student work, and projects. All assignments are weighted the same. You can check your child's grades on PowerSchool. If I have specific concerns, I will communicate that to you. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.

Heart Word List 2026-2027
This is the Heart Word list for the school year. Words will be introduced weekly and assessed every midterm and 9 weeks. I want my kids to be able to read, write, spell, and locate a given word. There are also some weeks set aside for heart word review.

Accelerated Reader (AR) is something I track starting second semester to prepare for 2nd grade. Students who receive an AR level from their STAR test can take AR tests any time there is free time within the classroom ( beginning of day, DEAR time, etc).

Welcome to our Backyard Safari! Every great adventure is even better when we explore it together. I believe that a strong partnership between home and school is one of the best ways to help your child grow, learn, and thrive throughout first grade.
This year, email will be my primary and only form of classroom communication. I will use email to share classroom news, important reminders, upcoming events, and other helpful information from our classroom adventures. Please be sure to check your email regularly and keep your email address updated with the school so you don't miss any important updates. If there is a different email you would like me to use please let me know.
To help our classroom families stay connected, you will also have the opportunity to participate in an optional classroom directory. The directory is a great way for families to connect for playdates, birthday celebrations, homework questions, or other classroom-related activities. Participation is completely voluntary, and only families who choose to be included will be listed.
