Our reading curriculum includes foundational skills of sound patterns and fluency, comprehension skills in literature and nonfiction, and vocabulary. We focus on specific skills as we read picture books as a class, work with partners, and participate in book clubs with peers on similar reading levels. We work with vocabulary words for two weeks at a time, learning the meanings and how to use them in our writing and conversation. There is a vocabulary test every other Thursday. I expect my students to read at least 20 minutes every night at home.
