Our reading curriculum includes foundational skills of sound patterns and fluency, comprehension skills in literature and nonfiction, and vocabulary. We focus on specific skills as we read picture books as a class, work with partners, and participate in book clubs with peers on similar reading levels. We work with vocabulary words for two weeks at a time, learning the meanings and how to use them in our writing and conversation. There is a vocabulary test every other Thursday. I expect my students to read at least 20 minutes every night at home.

Writing and Language is integrated together. We will do Daily Language Review (with a quiz on Friday) every other week. This helps students review crucial language skills and learn new skills. During writing time, we explore different types of writing including informative, narrative, persuasive, and poetry. We also have weekly spelling tests for students that are still mastering spelling patterns.

We learn through several different themes throughout the year to cover social studies and science standards. This year our themes will be: Community, Friendship, Sound, Economics, Geology, and Biomes/Plants/Animals.

We use the Ready Math series. Our hope is to help the students become critical thinkers and problem solvers. We will be keeping our students for math this year unless they go to fourth/fifth grade math. Mrs. Younts teaches fourth grade math and Mrs. Minogue teaches fifth grade math.

Each student will have a ChromeBook to use in class. We will be learning digital citizenship, typing, and other computer skills.
