Dear Parents,

Welcome to first grade! I am looking forward to getting to know all of you. I am excited about having a terrific year with your children.

There are many important goals in first grade. Not only do first graders need to work towards mastery of first grade skills but they also need to develop social skills and learn to work together to share ideas. They need to feel good about themselves and their abilities so they can love learning. First grade is an extremely important year and we can work together to make it as “stress free” as possible. If you think there is a problem and your child is not happy to go to school each day, please call so we can work it out together.

Children in first grade are in a concrete stage of development and learn best from hands-on meaningful activities. Papers and workbooks have their place but are most beneficial for practice and reinforcement of concepts learned through meaningful activities. If your child does not come home with a stack of papers every day, please do not assume that a lot of meaningful learning was not taking place.

Again, welcome to 1^st grade. If you have any questions at any time throughout the year, please do not hesitate to contact me.
