Our classroom uses Conscious Discipline, a social-emotional learning approach that helps students develop self-regulation, problem-solving skills, and positive relationships. Rather than focusing solely on rules and consequences, Conscious Discipline teaches children how to recognize their emotions, manage their feelings, and make responsible choices. This approach creates a safe, connected learning environment where every child feels valued and respected.
Throughout the school year, students will learn and practice strategies that help them calm their bodies, communicate effectively, resolve conflicts, and contribute positively to our classroom community. Through daily routines, class meetings, and intentional relationship-building, students will gain the skills they need to be successful learners, friends, and leaders.
A key part of Conscious Discipline is helping students understand how their brains work. We learn about the three main parts of the brain: the Survival State, the Emotional State, and the Executive State. When children feel threatened, overwhelmed, or upset, they may enter their Survival State, where their focus is simply on staying safe. In the Emotional State, strong feelings can make it difficult to think clearly or solve problems. The Executive State is where students can think, learn, make decisions, and regulate their behavior effectively.
As a district, our goal is to help students recognize which state they are in and learn strategies to return to their Executive State when challenges arise. By practicing calming techniques, building emotional awareness, and strengthening connections with others, students develop the skills needed to manage emotions and stay ready to learn.
At the beginning of the school year, our class will work together as a team to create a shared Class Promise. Through discussions, collaboration, and reflection, students will help develop the routines, procedures, and expectations that allow our classroom to function fairly, smoothly, and consistently. By involving students in this process, they gain ownership of our classroom community and a deeper understanding of how their choices impact others.
Our Class Promise will serve as a guide for how we learn, work, and treat one another throughout the year. Once our class has created and agreed upon these expectations, they will be posted here for families to view and reference throughout the school year!
