Homework Bingo

The Homework Bingo is a little different from traditional homework since I will not be sending formal homework worksheets or assignments nightly. The reasoning behind this is that studies show there is very minimal, if any, positive correlation between homework completion and academic achievement in the elementary grades. In fact, too much homework in the elementary grades can result in negative feelings about school, lowered self-confidence, and an overall diminished quality of life. In my eyes, kids need to be kids!

The following components of Homework Bingo make this a better alternative to traditional homework:

  1. Choice: The students either do it or they don’t. Each Friday, a bingo sheet will be sent home along with different activities the students can choose to do. The students get to decide which activities they want to do and how many different ways they can create a bingo.

  2. Incentive: Although the choices are optional, there is an incentive for students who do choose to do them. For each bingo, students will get a chance to earn a prize. HOWEVER, there will be zero consequences for students who do not complete!

  3. Fun!: Learning does not just occur on paper!

So here’s the basic idea of Bingo Homework:

  1. The Homework Bingo folder will go home on Friday, and the students have all week to get a Bingo. The students will need to bring back the Bingo Homework folder on Friday with any or all the items completed in it.

  2. The students' spelling and vocabulary words for that week will be in their folders along with COUNTLESS strategies to practice with them.

  3. Math worksheets and activities will be included as well. These will help enforce the different skills we are working on in class.

  4. The other choices will vary. Some will consist of hands-on activities, some will consist of talking or collaborating with a family member or friend, and others will simply get outside and explore!

  5. Your role as a parent is to encourage your child to complete the different activities and just to have fun!

  6. All Homework Bingo folders need to be returned every Friday.
