Welcome! Kindergarten is going to be a year of great educational and social growth for your child! We will be participating in many hands-on learning experiences in all areas of the curriculum. I am looking forward to getting to know you and your child. It is going to be a fun and exciting year!
I have prepared this handbook to help answer
questions about school events and procedure in the
classroom and in the school. Please let me know if
you have any questions.
Arrival:
Bus Riders
Students riding the bus in the morning will unload at the front of Woodland Elementary at 9:30 A.M.
Parent Car-riders
If you plan on driving your child to school in the morning, please join the car rider line at the back of the building. Your child will enter door #16 (next to the gym). Students may exit their vehicles at 9:30 am once staff members are outside to supervise. Please do not get out of your car to walk your child to the doors. Please do not drop your child off at the front entrance.
Dismissal: Any dismissal changes need to be made to the office by 2:00pm.
Bus Riders
Bus riders will begin loading at 4:10 pm. Buses will leave WES approximately at 4:20pm. Please download "Here Comes the Bus" for specific bus timing information.
Parent Car-rider Pickup
Parents will wait in cars in line until staff begin loading car riders at 3:55. Parents will not enter the building at the car rider line.
Before and After School Care
Please contact the YMCA for information regarding before and after school care.
Please be sure your child keeps his/her bus tag on backpack the first few weeks of school. This helps a great deal until your child learns his/her bus number and bus position in the line.
If your child will be a car rider at the end of the day your child will walk down to the gym with the guidance of an adult.
Attendance:
If your child is going to be absent, you must notify the elementary school office (765-269-8220) of the absence as early as possible. Any absence that is not accompanied by a written explanation will be recorded as unexcused. Your child is allotted a limited number of unexcused absences per school year.
Breakfast and Lunch: Your child may purchase breakfast and lunch each day or choose to bring lunch from home. Breakfast brought from home is not allowed. This year the cost of lunch is $2.40 and breakfast is $1.40. Lunch menus
can be found at www.tsc.k12.in.us or www.wes.tsc.k12.in.us.
Due to limited cafeteria seating, outside guests will not be allowed for lunch. Also, soda is not allowed during lunch.
Snack Time
In order to offer an afternoon snack each day, I ask for monthly donations for the class snack bucket. Snacks should
be healthy and individually packaged. If your child prefers to bring their own snack each day from home that is perfectly fine. With food allergies in the classroom here are some good snack options.
Please refrain from sending candy or items needing to be refrigerated.
*goldfish *pretzels *graham crackers *cereal *cookies
***Due to different food allergies in our classroom, please refrain from sending in snacks with peanut/ tree nuts. I will send a reminder and a list of different options of snacks that are allergen-free. Thank you for your cooperation and keeping our kids safe.***
If your child has any food allergies not listed in PowerSchool, please let me know right away!!

Nurse’s Office:
We are very fortunate to have a wonderful nursing staff at Woodland! I take care of minor injuries in the classroom, such as scrapes and scratches. If your child gets sick at school or needs your attention, you will be contacted by the school nurse. If it is necessary for your child to take medication during the school day, the medication needs to be dropped off in the nurse’s office by an adult. The school nurse will administer all medications. A doctor’s note must accompany the medication explaining the purpose of the medication, the time of day it is to be taken, and dosage information. Do not send medication to school in your child’s book bag! This includes cough drops or sore throat pops.
Newsletter:
A classroom newsletter will be sent home most weeks. It will contain information about school events and important reminders. Please read it carefully. Newsletters will be sent through email and posted on Class Dojo. If you do not have an email address and need a paper copy sent home, please let me know.
Communication:
It is very important to me to have open and clear communication. I can be reached by ClassDojo, email, or by phone. ClassDojo is the fastest way to reach me. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you ever have any questions or concerns. I try to respond to messages as quickly as possible. For school delay, closings, and important updates, check the TSC website at www.tsc.k12.in.us
For school closings, delays, and important updates, go to the TSC website at tsc.k12.in.us and click on the Quicklinks. Create an account on the Powerschool Parent Portal. Click on the Subscriptions and follow to add your telephone and email address. Also, stay connected using ClassDojo to see what is happening in our classroom. I will provide you with an instruction sheet with the classroom code.
Classroom Behavior Management: All students deserve to learn in a positive, safe, and nurturing classroom! Our plan provides guidance so the students can make good choices. The plan emphasizes and rewards good behavior as a whole class. As a class, we decide what we want to work towards like sidewalk chalk outside, special snacks, bubbles, pajama day, etc. We discuss how many pom-poms we need to earn (10,15, 20, 25) in order to get this reward. Whenever the class as a whole is caught doing something awesome (working quietly, cleaning up their space, using kind words or helping others, receiving a compliment etc.) they earn a pom-pom in our jar.
There are times that warrant a consequence for unwanted behaviors. I will give a child a warning, remind them of the expectations, and have a talk with them privately with most behaviors. If a child continues to have issues, a message will be sent on Class Dojo or a call to a parent to discuss together ways to better support the child. If a behavior is severe, I will speak with Mr. Sweet and we will discuss a suitable consequence for their behavior.
Homework:
More information will be provided in the coming weeks.
Notes and Reminders:
Notes and reminders are sent home regularly. Please check your child’s book bag
daily for these notes.
Parent Teacher Conferences:
Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled two times during the year (October and March). You will be given more information about conferences and times to attend as the time grows closer.
Report Cards:
Report cards are issued every nine weeks to coincide with the end of the nine weeks grading period. Report cards can be viewed in PowerSchool.
Grading Policy:
Each student will be evaluated individually through observation and individualized testing. The report card you'll see reflects the Indiana State Standards that are being taught in the classroom.
4= Mastery; student can consistently perform and show mastery of that particular skill
3= approaching mastery; student is close but shows inconsistent ability to show that skill
2= developing mastery; student struggles to show signs of mastery but can periodically
1= needs to master; student fails to show signs of mastery for that skill
Water Bottles:
I encourage you to send a spill proof water bottle with your child to school.
Water bottles will be sent home every Friday for you to wash and return on Monday.
Field Trips:
Kindergarteners take two field trips a year. When you registered online a general consent form was required. An additional permission slip form may be required and will be sent home several weeks before the field trip. Chaperones will be needed for these field trips. Background checks are required to be able to be a chaperone. Chaperone lists are required to be turned in 15 days before the
field trip date. There may be times that we do not have enough room on the bus to accommodate all classes and parent chaperones. If this is the case, you will be asked to follow behind the bus in your car. Please be aware that no siblings are permitted to accompany the class on field trips.
Background Checks:
If you think you want to volunteer or chaperone, it’s suggested that you submit your check at the beginning of the school year. Background checks cost $20.45 and are valid for 3 years. It can be found at this address: https://securevolunteer.com/TIPPECANOE-SCHOOL-CORPORATION/home
Parent Helpers
Throughout the year we will have various activities that will require some additional help inside and outside the classroom. As you may already have experienced, there are always things to cut out, glue together, color, hole punch etc. in a kindergarten classroom. If you’re willing and able please let me know how you’d like to help out! I’d love the extra set of hands!!
Birthdays:
Birthdays are always an exciting time for students- especially in Kindergarten! If your child’s birthday falls during summer months when we aren’t in school, we will celebrate your child’s half birthday! If you would like, you may send in birthday treats (cupcakes, cookies etc.) as a special snack. Please let me know ahead of time if you intend to bring special treats to school. No birthday cakes, ice cream etc. will be allowed as it is very difficult to pass out and not make a mess in the process.
Birthday party invitations (for parties outside of school) may not be passed out at school unless ALL of the girls are invited (if your child is a girl) or ALL of the boys are invited (if your child is a boy)… or of course you can invite the entire class. Please do not send a few with your child to pass out during recess or lunch time, as I will return them to you that evening.
Class Parties:
We will have 4 parties throughout the year.
*Fall Party
*Winter Party
*Valentine’s Party
*End of Year Party
All parents were asked to sign up to help with one of the parties at the open house. I will try to honor your requests as much as possible. Even if you cannot attend the party, you can send in supplies or treats. A party list will be sent home noting the parent volunteers for each party. As parties draw near, I will contact the party volunteers to ask for donations.
Book Orders:
Once a month your child will bring home book order catalogs from Scholastic Book
Clubs. If you wish to order, simply fill out the form and return it to school along with payment. You may also choose to order online using the classroom
Code Q4NMD.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me through Class Dojo, at school (765-269-8220), or via email: cadavidson@tsc.k12.in.us.
I am looking forward to a great year full of lots of growth academically and socially!
