Pupil Progress Report Explanation
Hershey Elementary Fourth Grade
Grades in all subject areas will be determined through a combination of formal and informal assessment. Mastery, partial mastery, and non-mastery of Indiana State Standards will be assessed in all areas.
A standard grading scale is used as follows:
90%-100% A
80%-90% B
70%-80% C
60%-70% D
59% and below F
Assignments that come in late will be graded; however, grades will be reduced by 10% for the first day. Any assignment that is more than two days late will receive a zero.
Weighting of Grades:
Each individual area on the report card will include a combination of grades for daily work and tests. Tests are worth more weight as they show what the kids can do independently. Some assignments may be given a participation grade only. This means if they do the work regardless of right/wrong answers they will be given credit.
Subject Area Assessment:
Reading: Grades will be based on daily assignments, reading tests, reading quizzes, AR completion, spelling activities, spelling tests, projects, reading the weekly story at home (participation), vocabulary worksheets and activities, and special assignments.
Writing: Grades will be based on mastering writing skills. Writing rubrics will be used. We will assess formal essays as well as the writing notebook. We will also have grammar quizzes.
Math: Grades will be based on daily homework, quizzes, and tests.
Science/Social Studies: Grades based on daily work, unit tests, projects, labs, teacher observation, and quizzes.
Parent Contact: Parents will be given four formal grade reports each year. Those come at the end of the grading periods in October, December, March, and May. Parents have access to the Powerschool Parent Portal where they can view grades or missing assignments. Phone calls or parent conferences (other than the two formal conferences in October and March) will be used on an "as needed" basis. Graded assignments are returned to students for them to take home in their Friday Folder to show parents. Please address concerns as they arise. Do not wait until the end of the grading period. Scores will not be changed after the report card is printed.
Homework: Assignments will be turned in when the students arrive each morning. If the work is not finished on arrival it will be late. All students are required to keep a record of their assignments in the assignment book. Students will be allowed to turn in a late assignment the next day. If it is not turned in the next day, it will be recorded as a zero. . If a student is absent, he or she will be given time to make up the assignments-one day for each day absent. Work that was due on the day of any absence will be due the day the student returns to school. It is the student's responsibility to make sure he/she finds out what assignments were missed while absent. Requests for homework on days absent must be made in the office by 10:00 AM. Because my plans change daily based on the needs of my students, it is impossible for me to give homework if you plan a vacation during the school year. Work for self-scheduled holidays will be given when your student returns to school.
