Reading and Literature: Reading instruction in 5th grade will be provided by Mrs. Wright. IReady Reading is the adopted basal text for our school. Please see the mind map where you will find what topics are covered in fifth grade. I adopt an approach to reading instruction called Balanced Literacy. This approach allows me to provide flexibility to students. Reading material will be a combination of fiction and non-fiction texts, both whole group and small group instruction (guided reading). These guided reading groups are developed to meet individual needs based on data from IReady Diagnostic, STAR, and other classroom assessments.
Students will receive grades based on completion as well as their performance on activities. Students will also complete assignments and “exit tickets” as we move through lessons. “Exit Tickets” are a formative assessment used to check student understanding of new material. Students will complete a quiz/test at the end of each unit.
Language Arts: The grade you see under Writing will include grades for the following types of assignments: writing, speaking and listening skills.
Mathematics: Math instruction in 5th grade will be provided by Mr. Culbreth. Ready Math is the adopted Mathematics program and will be used for some instruction. Grades in Math will be determined based on point accumulation throughout the semester. Students will participate in both whole group and small group instruction. Small group instruction is based on data from iReady diagnostic and other classroom assessments. In small groups, students are able to receive re-teaching and more individualized instruction and guidance.
Math grades given will reflect activities completed in the following areas: Computation, Number Sense, Algebraic Thinking, Measurement, Data Analysis and Geometry. Students will also complete assignments and quizzes as we move through lessons.
Social Studies: The grade you see under Social Studies will include grades for all Social Studies skills..
Science: The grade for Science will include grades for all Science related assignments and projects.
Computer Science: We will be using a number scale 1-4 instead of letter grades.
Health: Students will receive a letter grade for their Health grade.
Grading: Many grades will be taken in the form of assessments throughout the week. I will also take grades on work produced during the week. Most grades will be taken with 25, 50 or 100 points. That way students will be able to understand their grade letter for each assignment.
Grading Scale:
90-100 A
80-89 B
70-79 C
60-69 D
REDO: Students are allowed to redo work once, grades will be averaged between the two grades. Parent signature may be required at times.
4th 9 weeks: The last nine weeks the students will be checking their PowerSchool daily and should be writing down their missing assignments in their agendas. The assignments are due on Friday of the week. I will not be giving them multiple reminders and if it is not turned in it will show as a zero at the end of the nine weeks.
Discipline: I believe the best way to get results is with positive reinforcement. Students will be rewarded for doing the right thing.
Inappropriate Behaviors:
Talking out/disturbing others
Disobeying
Lying/Cheating
Arguing with an adult
Lack of Teamwork within others
