Students are expected to meet a quarterly Accelerated Reader (AR) goal. To help students stay on track and avoid last-minute stress, we encourage them to read for at least 20 minutes each evening.
Reading grades may include:

Reading comprehension activities
Vocabulary
Homework
Quizzes and tests
Accelerated Reader
Assessed classwork, homework, quizzes, and tests are weighted equally.
Students will participate in daily reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary instruction.
Grades may include:
Writing assignments scored with teacher rubrics
Writing Workshop participation
Grammar and spelling assessments
Vocabulary activities
Quizzes and tests
Selected classroom assignments
Students are encouraged to revise their work and demonstrate growth throughout the writing process.
Students will be assessed using a variety of measures throughout each unit.

Not every practice assignment will be graded. Practice is designed to help students develop understanding before formal assessments. Assessed assignments, homework, quizzes, and tests are weighted equally.
Students will engage in hands-on learning, discussions, investigations, and projects throughout each unit.
Grades may include:

Homework
Projects and presentations
Quizzes
Unit tests
Not all practice assignments will be graded, but all classwork is designed to prepare students for assessments.
Students receive marks reflecting their development in the following areas:
Works cooperatively with others
Shows respect for others and school property
Demonstrates effort and perseverance
Accepts responsibility for actions and learning
Behaves with honesty and integrity
Performance is reported using a 4, 3, 2, 1 scale.
Students are expected to complete and submit assignments on time.
Assignments are considered complete only after they have been submitted.
Work submitted one week or more after the due date may receive a 10% deduction.
Missing assignments that remain incomplete after one week or at the end of the grading period may receive a zero.
Academic honesty is expected at all times. Assignments involving cheating or plagiarism will receive no credit (0%).
Students are expected to complete all work to the best of their ability.

As fifth graders, students are leaders within our school community and are expected to model these expectations each day.
Students are given opportunities to make positive choices and correct their behavior. When expectations are not met, the following progression may be used:
First reminder – Warning
Second reminder – Warning
Third reminder – Loss of 5 minutes of recess
Fourth reminder – Loss of recess
Fifth reminder – Think Sheet and/or parent contact
Sixth reminder – Office referral
Some behaviors are more serious and may result in immediate consequences, including parent contact, a Think Sheet, or an office referral. Multiple steps may be skipped depending on the severity of the behavior.
Our goal is always to teach students appropriate choices, encourage personal responsibility, and maintain a positive learning environment for everyone.
