Ag Mechanics

This contest evaluates students’ knowledge and skills in agricultural mechanics. Participants identify the tools, materials, and equipment used in the industry and may complete hands-on tasks such as welding, woodworking, and operating equipment. The contest emphasizes problem-solving, technical skills, and safety practices.

Best Informed Greenhand (B.I.G.)

B.I.G. is a contest that helps students learn and understand the aims, purposes, history, and structure of the FFA organization at the local, state, and national levels. Participants compete as a team to demonstrate their knowledge of how FFA is organized and what it stands for.

Floral Design

This contest includes identification, judging, and construction. Students identify cut flowers, potted plants, materials, and tools used in the floral industry. They also evaluate six judging classes, including cut flowers, potted plants, flowering potted plants, and floral designs. Students then construct a corsage and a floral arrangement to demonstrate their skills.

Livestock Judging

This contest focuses on evaluating animals and making informed decisions based on their characteristics. Students assess various livestock species, rank classes of animals, and justify their decisions using proper terminology. The contest develops critical thinking, observation, and reasoning skills.

Veterinary Science

This contest includes identification, general knowledge, and hands-on practicums. Students are responsible for knowing breeds, parasites, and common materials and tools used in the veterinary industry. They also complete calculations, including determining correct dosage percentages for vaccinations.

Creed Speaking
Open to 7th–9th-grade FFA members, this contest requires students to recite the FFA Creed by E.M. Tiffany from memory and answer questions about its meaning and purpose.

Employment Skills (Job Interview)
Juniors and seniors create a resume, cover letter, and job application for a mock interview. Students gain valuable life skills and public speaking experience.

Extemporaneous Public Speaking (Extemp)
Juniors and seniors are given 30 minutes to prepare and deliver a 6–8 minute speech on one of three assigned agricultural topics.

Impromptu Speaking
Designed for sophomores, this contest develops quick-thinking and speaking skills. Students draw three slips with agricultural topics, choose one, and speak for one minute on that topic. They then draw three quote slips and give a one-minute response.

Parliamentary Procedure (Parli Pro)
Six students conduct a mock FFA chapter meeting, handling the business portion within an 11-minute timeframe. Participants learn proper use of Robert’s Rules of Order and practice making required motions.

Prepared Public Speaking
Juniors and seniors prepare and deliver a 6–8 minute speech on an agricultural topic.
